Without waiting for an answer, Sian turned back to the rock wall to her front. Her finger moved and small crack appeared in the solid rock. She moved her hand a bit and the crack widened, stone shifting and molding to the shape she desired. She caught a slight bubbling in the rock that signified that she had hit something of a different density and quickly made changes in how she configured this part of the tunnel. Satisfied that she had made the corrections, she smiled to herself and continued driving the underground passage towards the building.

To Sian, this was all very clearly a mental high. She had studied hard at various universities to learn the skills that allowed her to plan the exact placement of the support beams, how much space was needed between supports, how to create the air shafts. Her magic allowed it all to come together. She had lost count of the number of similar excavations she had made to get to one buried tomb or another. In some ways being underground is preferable to being on the surface. Sian snickered; certainly she does not have to suffer the effects of the sunlight on her skin down here.

She hears a sigh from somewhere behind her and grins without looking around. “I am going as quickly as I think is safe. There is a great deal of rock above us right now and I am sure that none of us want it caving in about us.”

Lilly’s drone has no trouble following the trail of footsteps, and the trail does indeed end in the grove of young spruce which seem to have so far avoided the death that is taking place to the trees on either side. The footsteps lead right to one of the trees, and a flattened path suggests that the person crawled in under the sheltering branches of green needles.

The drone does not immediately spot whoever is under the green boughs of the tree, however. Perhaps they are buried in the snow? Or under a camouflage tarp? Or invisible? Lilly can fiddle with the drone and see if it can manage a better view

    Spoiler

Just as Lilly is absorbing this, she sees a truck slowly roll into the clearing from the track in. The team’s vehicles are blocking the end of the road, so it must have been parked on the far side of the ridge from them? She can just hear the crunch of the crusty snow under its tires, its electric engine all but silent at this range

Sian can tell that they have reached the corrupted area when her latest air shaft breaks out of the rock, and a plug of corrupted soil falls down. The small amount of astral corruption that accompanies the soil and seeps down the shaft is not a major impediment to a caster as skilled as her, but she can tell that up at the surface it may be a different story. Part of her notes that it is interesting how the ancient granite has resisted the corrupted mana in the soil above.

Sian looks at the small pile of dirt on the floor of the tunnel and waves her hand. A small section of the rock molds itself over the dirt and evens out as much as possible. “We crossed into the contaminated area somewhere between the last air shaft and this one. That means that we are within 650 meters of the building, depending on how straight I can make the tunnel. The background count will likely increase the closer we get, but it is easily overcome at this point as the solid rock here seems to be a bit resistant to the effects. I would expect about thirty to forty minutes longer doing this, unless we run into difficulties.”

Sian continues on for a bit then pauses in her mining for a moment. Turning to the others, she says, “My spirit is telling me that a vehicle just pulled into the clearing. Not sure yet where it is headed.”

She lifts her ‘link up. >>Thank you, Lilly. Please remember that you have an ally up there, although you may need to contact me if you need assistance. His second task is to protect you, but he might try to claim that he is performing his primary task unless I remind him.<<

[Saturday January 21, 2079; Mage’s Farm, Somewhere near Sudbury]

The drone wasn’t exactly equipped for surveillance but Lily was able to direct it remotely towards the most likely location of the hidden watcher and she in the meantime bent down to study the footprints to see if she could determine more about who she was facing

    > There’s a vehicle moving up to the farm, it’s on the track so must have been waiting for something. Still trying to get a bead on our hidden watcher but it might come down to sticking my hand in the wasps nest to see what happens.

And she slipped off her gloves so that her electrical shock contacts could be brought to play if needs be

Looking at the tracks, Lilly quickly realizes that more than one person has walked in the same footsteps, whether to be stealthy or just to save slogging through the snow. Looking at a few of the nearby prints, she only finds traces of two sole patterns, although she can’t be positive that more haven’t been obliterated by the traffic on top.

The drone manages to pick out a couple of rough rectangles that are a cleaner white than the surrounding snow, not featuring the same scattering of dead needles or faint grey of accumulated pollution. Each whiter patch seems to be about the right size for a human, or maybe a shorter elf or orc.

It doesn’t look like their faces are exposed, so if they are keeping watch at all it must be through cameras, drones, or other sensors, but Lilly’s drone doesn’t spot those.

    Al was fidgeting with impatience.

He was in a makeshift mineshaft with most of the others. The progress had been lightning fast relative to the speed of a conventional excavation. But it was still considerably less fast than he could walk. So he had whole lot of nothing to do. He felt like he was standing in the line for the funhouse at the Maccabbee County Fair. Stand, shuffle forward, stand….for while he’d thought to make himself useful by double-checking the structural integrity and ventilation of their shaft, but Sian’s skill soon made that function redundant.

And now the situation was evolving rapidly up top, and him stuck underground down here…

He shrugged, lit a Lucky, and tried to amuse himself by watching Sian and remembering what she looked like naked (all the while strenuously disregarding the fact that she was a clinically insane vampire that thought she was from another planet – cuz that sort of thing could really kill a hard-on).

The snap of Al’s lighter broke batshits train of thought. As she watched Sian work she noticed hie Al was looking at the mage. She was glad she was wearing a helmet covered in sensors to cover her blushes. For her that was uncharted territory, her thoughts turned to her birthday in a few weeks time. She still worried she was going to get Connor into trouble. She knew the feds were watching. They had been if they hadn’t been following them back from the gala ball she would have pounced on him then and there in the limousine home. Instead she allowed him to walk her to the lobby and gave him a wave from the elevator as the doors shut.

She snapped her mind back to the here and down

“lilly do you want me to come and cover you from the crest of the hill?” she keyed her comm

Kynos’ usual impatience was tempered by the drone feed. So far he had refrained from giving advice – he expected the cyborg girl to know her stuff. He had been impressed about the level of augmentation – full limb prostetics were costly – although he wouldn’t have gone for them. He prefered being the cyborg with the fast reflexes.

<<Tazer whoever that is. You can apologize later – but we don’t need any witnesses at a wetwork job.>>

Stalking forwards on her belly for a few meters more Lily dashed a quick message to the team

    > Look’s like the party is going to be out here. I’m going to try and silence the two watchers, as you say, we can ask them questions later.

And then like a greyhound out of the gate she exploded across the last fifty meters or so between her and the watcher’s hide. The hydraulic rams in her legs gave her more than enough strength to compensate for the snow cover and with a last final bound she was hurtling high through the trees…

TThey must have had some sort of observation running, for the tarps were being tossed aside and two people were struggling to turn to face Lilly. Non-enhanced people just move so slow!

As Lilly lands between them, in a shower of spruce needles and snow, they have barely made it to their feet, and still don’t have their hunting rifles aimed at her. The weapons look like they would be formidable at a range, but are not the best in close quarters.

Lilly’s target has the presence of mind to try and deflect her with his rifle, and whether it was part of his plan or not a spruce bough tries to take out Lilly’s eyes … but Lilly is simply too fast and skilled and gets under his guard, landing a solid slap on his thigh and delivering a solid shock. He croaks out a sound of pain as his legs spasms and he drops hard to the ground, continuing to cry and thrash around in the after-throes of the shock.

The second man manages to back-pedal a couple of steps without sliding off the small knoll, giving him room to lower his rifle at Lilly. She makes a carefully timed leap to throw off his aim, but instead of shooting he grunts out “You ain’t no bear. What is going on around here?”

Hunters? Well that certainly explained what they might be doing here, particularly after the tracks that Al had helped to identify. Regretfully Kynos was right, having witnesses to their plans would not be a good idea. These thoughts flashed through Lily’s mind as she ducked down low under the barrel of the rifle, deflecting it slightly on her left arm as she attempted to drive the shockhand up in to the man’s abdomen…

The hunter was ready for Lilly to try something, but his reactions were far too slow. Lilly manages to reach under the hem of his parka and slam her shock hand up against less thickly insulated regions, and he also drops to the ground after an almighty spasm, twitching and wimpering.

No sooner has she dropped the man, however, than the snow to the side of the little knoll erupts, and something massive, shaggy, and white charges up. There is no way that she should have missed seeing something this big, under any normal sort of circumstances.
