Tanya nods and leaves the table for the living room, walking through it to the locked door. She passes a card through a reader which opens a small portal that contains a plate for a hand print. The scanner goes green and a second, smaller portal opens for her to put her right eye up to. There is a click and the door pops open a bit. She steps back and the smaller portal closes, leaving the hand scanner open, which Tanya points to. ”OK, each of you can place your right hand on the scanner and wait for it to read you, then do the same with your right eye. It will print a small card that will allow you to access the maglock. To enter, you just run the card then let the scanner read your print. The codes are good for only a week, so we will need to update them as we go.”
Inside the room is a long conference table with sixteen chairs placed around it. There are cabinets on the walls and a door at the far end of the right and left hand walls. Tanya motions to the seats and stands behind the one to the left of center on one of the long edges. ”There is a small bunkroom through the door on the left wall that has bunks for up to eight people and a separate shower and bathroom. The door on the right wall leads to a small kitchen with a stove and refrigerator for drinks and snacks. The cabinets around the room have updated inventory lists on them that tell you what is in each drawer. In general, I keep some weapons in the taller racks on the far wall, clothing items in the cabinets and racks on the right wall, and equipment in those on the left wall.”
She takes a seat and motions to the rest to do so as well. Tanya touches a button on the table, bringing up a control keyboard at each seat. She fiddles with some of the keys and a holo-projector pops up in the center of the table. ”Each seat has controls like this so each of us can add information and move the picture around. I took the liberty of having Monique add what has been sent to me so far, but I might have missed something, so please feel free to add what you can. I would ask that we take turns doing it so we do not overlap what someone else is doing. Now, Ex-Gladius, you have the sensors, but can you tell us what type and can you program in the coverage they give? We might be able to spot blind spots.”
The projector shows a fairly well defined diagram of the target building and the area around it. With a few keystrokes, Tanya focuses on the building itself and the team can see through the walls to the three-dimensional interior sections as given by the original blueprints.

Rebecca takes off her AR glasses and watches the projector. She is astonished by the expensive looking retro tech and watches intently trying to spot a useful blindspot where they hack a device.April 15, 2019 at 2:25 am #17780
Ichante sleeps reasonably well, all thing considered. Better than she expected. She doesn’t wake up in time to exercise with Tanya, partly because Ichante doesn’t really enjoy exercise and inevitably ends up using her magic to cheat instead. She showers, dresses nicely, and goes to join the others in the conference room. With her light grey Synergist Business Line suit, she looks like a corper attending a board meeting. For breakfast she focuses on the fresh fruit, which is still a rare treat for her.
”Wait wait wait,” she tells Becky. ”You declined to stay here last night because it feels too much like a ‘golden cage’, so you went and stayed at Roger’s place instead? Because that place isn’t a golden cage??” She shakes her head.
”So, wait, explain what you’re doing now…” she tells Ulrich, trying to make heads or tails of his aura. She can feel a spirit and spells and it’s like they’re all rolled up together like a jam roly-poly. ”The spirit… SORRY, ‘mind shard’ is in you… but you still have control over yourself?” She looks deeply impressed. ”Can anyone learn to do that? I would be interested to learn.”
”Yeah, yeah,” she waves off Bronwean. ”I can do a courier outfit in my sleep. The question is, what’s wrong with an Urban Explorer Jumpsuit? They’re well-armored and come with a biomonitor, and I see all the couriers downtown wearing them. You can buy a helmet that goes with them that will make you more forgettable. If you’re worried about looking the same each pass, we can get one with electrochromic threads. You can change the color, text, images, and patterns as much as you want. You’ll look wiz as frag.”
Then it’s her turn to offer insights on planning. ”I think we’re making a lot of effort to get exterior information. Has anyone read Silk’s file in its entirety? The seems to be exactly the type of thing that we should already know, because it’s what would have tipped Silk off in the first place.
”In my opinion, the top priority should be getting inside the place to get a look around. Tanya’s already a donor, right? I think she should call them up today and set up a meeting for tomorrow with a new potential donor.” She points to Rebecca. ”If they’re like any non-profit, they should jump at the chance for free money. No need to get elaborate with a benefit concert or anything like that; just a tour for a potential donor. Get inside, place some bugs and some taps, and try to pop the bubble.
”As for today, if Zag can arrange an escort I think we should go spelunking in the Narrows. I’m comfortable Underground and can participate in that. Plus maybe that gets me an angle on some rooms which aren’t warded, if we’re lucky. If not, maybe I can figure out how think the walls are and what it would take to break through them, if it comes to that.
”Let’s also work with what’s outside of the institute. If there are deliveries happening at odd hours, let’s get eyes on them and find out what they are. If we don’t know what they are, let’s trail the delivery trucks back to their point of origin to get a sense of where it’s coming from and what it might be. Al and Becky are good drivers and should be able to tail them covertly.
”We should also target things outside the institute walls. Namely, the patients that don’t live onsite, or that hang out in the plaza during nice weather. Drek, they’re blind right? Al would be perfect for that; he can pour his gentlemanly charm in their ears and they don’t even have to look at him! Or Bronwean can bust out her guitar and play a song for them. Blind people love music, right? Right.”
She takes a bite of pineapple off her breakfast plate. ”I think there’s lots of low-hanging fruit here. We just have to pick it.”April 15, 2019 at 5:16 am #17784
Rebecca answers ”I am acclimated to my home, difficult to explain. Besides, the guards there let me come and go as I please. I don’t like to stay at one place for too long.”
She says ”Alright, so how about we do the following:
1. Set up a meeting for a donor – Me and Tanya
2. Look for opportunities to approach/befriend some of the blind people that go outside without directly approaching the institute.
Bronwean, and Al.
3. Tour below, and see how close we can get to the institute and if we can place a few Radar sensors that can penetrate to their lowest floors. Ex-gladius, Ichante, and Zag.

Tanya smiles. She is glad to see that ideas and opinions are coming in from everyone. She holds up a hand when Rebecca mentions the donor visit. ”I agree entirely with the donor visit, and you have probably identified the two people that should do that. But I do not think a call today is appropriate. It is Sunday and it is very likely that their administrative offices are closed for the day. I would suggest an early morning call to them to set something up.”
She looks over at Rebecca before continuing. ”Rebecca, did you already ask Weaver to look into the client list? Can he look deeper into the ones that do not live at the institute? If so, that should give us a better idea of how to approach them and see what can be done to befriend them. Beyond that, I am satisfied with your points as stated.”

“that’s what I meant by a jump suit sorry I just assumed but I really need is one that is used and looks used; so maybe last year’s colours? If I turn up all new it will standout. I did have one but I shredded it when I came off my board on a down hill still got the helmet. But yeah those new bombers look so fine ‘it’s for work’ is such a good excuse” she smiled “so can you help get a dirty used last year’s urban e jumpsuit”
She sat listening with her knees up under her chin
When they got to talking about the file
“we need the delivery companies and the see if we can hack the loads find out if what they deliver is the same as they order. we should tail then to make sure they are who they who they say they are would not be the first time someone hacked grid guide to imitate someone else car”April 15, 2019 at 4:54 pm #17801
Rebecca answers ”Yes, we’ll all do things in time as long as there is no concrete deadline we take the cautious approach. If Silk decides to risk it, we raid the plac.e I asked Weaver to do so, I hope he’ll have some options for us soon.”April 15, 2019 at 5:20 pm #17805
Ulrich nodded at Ichante: “Yes. It is part of Psi to keep your own self at the wheel while a mind shard is in you. I can teach you when we have time to do so.”
He turned to the others, searched for words and gave up frustrated: <<I fear you ignore an important part of our briefing: We are dealing with an organization that can use advanced analysis to create predictions just like our own Johnson. The longer we spend on conventional observation methods, the easier it will be for them to use those techniques against us.
The potential donor meeting is a good idea, but it should be coupled with the rest of us being ready to storm the place as well. Not only because there is a non-negligible chance they will call this bluff or in general will use the chance to corrupt people with power when the chance presents itself, but also because a quick strike without long preparation will make a surprise attack more likely to succeed.
That’s why I suggest infiltrating their system directly instead of a more cautious approach through long observation.
The act of observation creates a feedback that changes a given system. The longer we wait the greater the chance we are spotted and neutralized.
As far as I can see, there are no blind spots in their surveillance system, beyond the fact that there are so many, they will have to rely on agent systems to scan the data for significance.>>April 15, 2019 at 5:38 pm #17810

Tanya nods at the words but feels compelled to make a statement. ”All of that is true, but I had understood the parameters as given by Silk to be that this is just supposed to be a recon mission for now. Did I misunderstand something?”
58April 15, 2019 at 5:50 pm #17812
<<No, that’s what I understood too.
But the result of recon could turn into the need for action pretty quickly.
Believe me. If there had been more initiative when the Universal Brotherhood had been revealed to be what it was, a lot more people could have been saved and many horrors could have been avoided.
This whole operation smells an awfull lot like back then. Maybe a different kind of threat, but a very similar MO. Knowledge is power and being able to predict our moves given enough time is a tactical nightmare.
Once we have all the information we need, our window of opportunity to act might very well be gone as well.
It’s easier to abort a strike mission than to organize one on the quick…>>

Bronwean put her hand up “should we get all this information on a spider diagram maybe we can spot the holes in our knowledge that way” she sat up “when I get on site I’m doing it to size it up for a direct assault and seeing as I always end up being the breacher I want to check the doors, need to know were those hinges are”
She paused “shall we bring up a map and plot our observation plans and a draft assault plan?”April 15, 2019 at 6:15 pm #17819

Tanya nods. ”I do not have any personal experience with the particular situation you are referring to, but I know enough that that I accept what you say.” She looks around at the others. ”Any ideas on the sort of contingency plan we might need to execute? Do we need to lay our abilities bare? If so, let me be the first. I do not know if it is germane, but I have implants that allow me to change just about every feature of my body from the torso up, to include skin and hair coloring and the length of thee hair. I can assume multiple identities at short notice and can alter my voice to a wide range of options, male or female. I am very good at pretending to be someone other than who I am and carrying it off. My body is riddled with quality implants that allow me to move and act swiftly. I have several hidden smuggling compartments in my body that allow me to carry some of the tools of my trade with me. I have a natural immunity to Narcoject and carry lipstick laced with it, just in case. I am good with a dart pistol and keep it filled with Narcoject. My real weapon is a highly modified monofilament whip that has proven to be quite effective. I am a gymnast, a skydiver, a diver, a driver, and a damned good thief. I hope that I have not blurted out too much, but it seems to me that there is a chance that we may need to cover each other’s back and I do not want someone to wonder just what the frag I can do if the drek hits the fan.”
She pauses in her speaking to look at Bronwean. ”Yes, Bronwean, that might be a good place to start. Let me pull back the hologram a bit so we can focus on those things.”

Rebecca agrees with Ex-gladius with a nod. ”I am trying to come up with an aggressive raid like a plan. So we can revert to it, but so far we know too little for it to be much more than brute force. I don’t recommend such levels of violence in the places where the police actually care about the citizens.”April 15, 2019 at 6:55 pm #17827
“Let’s keep the draft assault in back pocket, I’m wondering what silk meant about medical order not being what you would expect. Where are the delivery notes?”April 15, 2019 at 6:58 pm #17828
Al screamed, filling the Gov’s soyrito wrapper-filled interior with the sandpaper avalanche of his voice, saved by waking from the strangling embrace of an ancient corpse squirming on a stick above him.
It was a little after eight. He didn’t need a clock. He knew.
He’d switched his plates and registration signal at the first blind spot after Humpty’s, and then again in two more blind spots he knew thereafter, emerging from each only with the passing of another Aztechnology Governor – a model close to ubiquitous on the streets of the Seattle Metroplex. Each time, the coloring of the Gov had exactly matched that of its counterpart.
Now he he was legally parked on the side of a tree-lined road at the base of Tiger Mountain. The Gov was all black with discrete pink cursive lettering on the driver’s side door: Quality Entertainment. The contact details for the upscale home-delivery entertainment service were readily scanned. It all went with his story if any overeager pawns asked why he as parked there. His target lived in a gated community a few hundred meters up the hillside. There were two roads down from it, and one was closed for the weekend for repairs. He’d told his sensor suite the details of all the vehicles registered to the target, with orders for the Gov’s pilot ot wake him if it passed. It hadn’t. But then it was pretty early yet for rich folks. He knew his target had a regular tee-off on Sunday mornings at eleven at the nearby Cougar Mountain Resort, but that was too much traffic and too many different access points to be sure to acquire him. And Al was hoping he’d make some stops on the way.
He chuckled as he thought of some others he’d worked with – how they’d have micro drones arrayed along prospective avenues of approach and be hacking into traffic cams and demons prowling….he stopped himself before his brain started hurting from visions of their complicated machinations. Al was a simple-is-best kind of guy. He’d follow this guy around. If he was dirty, and Al was sure he was, he’d spot the signs and know what to do next.April 16, 2019 at 1:08 am #17834
“Free money!” Ichante repeats to Tanya in a sing-song voice. ”Tell me that there isn’t a non-profit, bogus or legitimate, who won’t take your call on a Sunday because you’re offering free money!” She adds some jazz hands for emphasis. ”It’s a residential complex, there will be someone there to take your call. We’re not asking for more than five minutes of their time today to schedule something for tomorrow. Play it up that Rebecca is…” She waves her hands airily as she tries to come up with an adequate description. ”… a terribly rich, terribly important person who hates to be kept waiting and would be oh-so appreciative if they could fit her free money into their Monday schedule somewhere.
”If that’s still beyond your boundaries of acceptable etiquette, then you can do the same thing tomorrow morning, insisting on a meeting in the afternoon. I personally think that’s more rude than calling today, but everyone has their own notions of propriety. Plus, I think it would help to give them 24-hours notice to whet their appetite. That gives them time to get their top administrator on site to appease Frau Fickleness.” She seems to mean Becky, but more in the sense of the mannerisms that Becky might adopt for the role rather than Becky’s true disposition.
Ichante rolls her eyes a bit at the notion of a ‘backup assault’. It seemed like it might cause more mischief than it would solve, make the team more willing to act when they should wait for Silk’s green light. But, at the the same time, it was an amusing way to pass the time and there didn’t seem to be much else to do at the moment.
”This is a middle-class neighborhood so Knight-Errant could be on the scene anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes after the call comes through. If they think it requires a high-threat response then we need to figure the lower end of that scale to be on the conservative side. That’s not a lot of time to sweep a multi-story building, since you need time just to move through it. In 5 minutes, all we’ll really have time to do it an internal visual inspection, plus maybe grab any intel that we can carry out manually.
”To that end, this is a terrible idea. It tips our hand badly for a highly uncertain benefit. I agree with Ulrich that it’s not if our operation is found, but when, but that argument goes both ways. We can’t move so slowly that they have the chance to find us, but we can’t move so quickly that we expose ourselves needlessly.
”But, if the dominos start to fall and our hand is force, we need to be ready to go non-lethal – gel, stick-n-shock, Narcojet – to the greatest degree possible unless we want our faces on the news and the district attorney on our hoops. But we also need lethal options in case Ulrich’s worst nightmare comes true.
”If we have to go in, and we get tangled up in the sweep, I say we go out through the basement, via the Narrows. That’s pretty much the only way we’re guaranteed not to get encircled by K-E. That’s one of the reasons we need to explore that route today, if possible. Always secure your lines of retreat.”April 16, 2019 at 2:37 am #17836
Bronwean didn’t look up from the document she was reading “the blow the door open plan it the worst case scenario, but I have always planned for the worst and hoped for the best rather than the other way round. Kept me alive till now. Its a lot easier to scale back a plan than up. But If Tanya gets taken straight down to the basement and fed to the demon you going to have to sit on me to stop me trying to get to her ” she stopped and looked a some other feed she had up” What’s an im…. un… no… suppressant? It must be good on fries, they use alot of it for a residential unit. In fact why would they order syringes on a regular basis at all. Why?”April 16, 2019 at 2:53 am #17837
Rebecca says ”I do hate to be kept waiting, and I am only in town for a few days…” she frowns, and looks at Tanya. Half jokingly.
”Yes, I can’t wait to travel to below… If there is an entrance there, or if we can make an entrance by taking down a wall or something, it may be a gap in their defenses.”
She seems pensive ”Some random thought, I can perhaps tip Wacky that something is off with that place. She has like one million followers and would kill for a scope, she’ll be a massive distraction. She’ll probably won’t make it past the front door or lobby, but a famous blogger with her camera crew and you just can’t be too rude or violent.”

“when I was begging/busking on the streets of someone offered me more than a fist full of change or a Requesty first instinct was to wonder what that person wanted. Same here. These guys are dodgy using a dying charity as cover. If you rock up offering stupid money you need id’s and a cover story to match or it’s blown. They’ll either burn that building down or hunt you down or both.” she paused looking at Tanya” didn’t you tell me to check things out before you support them? Let’s look the donor and see if there are any who you have in your contacts list call them lunch them see what they know. Because right now you’re doing the social equivalent of blowing the door down. “April 16, 2019 at 3:07 pm #17865
Tanya gives a pretty laugh and holds her hands up in mock surrender, then makes a show of checking the ‘link on her wrist. ”Ok, OK. I will make the call. It is still a bit early, but what about, say, in an hour? Rebecca, I will need a name, unless you want me to use your real one, which might get Roger involved. Let me know. It is likely that these people will do at least a cursory background check on you, so we will need a convincing history for you. Perhaps Weaver can set something up for us. I can turn out a nice, convincing ID here, if you want a new one, SIN and all. The same goes for anyone here, my forgeries are pretty good and if anyone needs a new ID, please let me know.”
She turns to Bronwean, a twinkle in her eye. ”Thank you, dear, for promising to come get me from the demon’s mouth. Let’s hope that it does not come to that, but I would be glad for you to come help me.”
Turning back to Rebecca, she nods. ”Do you really think that you can get her down there? I also have contacts in the media world and I know one woman who might be convinced to come report on a story there. Your blogger friend may actually help. Do you think it should be timed so that Rebecca and I walk through the gauntlet to get to the meeting at the institute?”
