Sian watches to make sure that Shrike is not bothered as he makes his way to the nearest cars. A door open, spilling yellow light into the darkness and causing Sian to give her friend a sharp hiss of warning over her throat mic as two men step out into the parking lot from one of the buildings. A strike of a match and two cigarettes are lit and quickly smoked down, the men talking in soft voices. The chilled evening air shortens the time it takes to get down to the butt of the cigarette and soon enough both men return to the inviting warmth of the building.
Sian smiles as she sends the all clear to her friend.

I didn’t hessitate for a second longer: I moved across the parking lot like a particularly handsome shadow and unceremoneously rolled under the lifted undercarriage of my target. From there it was just a matter of moving my hand until the induction pad found connection. With direct connection established and no matrix connection to the world outside, it was relatively easy to hack the pretty unsophisticated device. I made sure to gain three MARKs before I unlocked the doors and created a temporary user account.

Al got Shrike’s message just as a pensive Haydee opened her pretty mouth to answer. With one hand he put a finger to his lips to quiet her, and with the other he tapped at his ear to explain he’d gotten a message. “Chit chat later, hon. Duty calls.”
Al’s concern about his companion’s attire had been academic – such was her doll-like beauty that she’d have attracted attention in sackcloth and ashes. He moved purposefully, gathering both provisions and camping gear with businesslike efficiency, and if the proprietor was pleased at the pile of purchases accumulating at the counter, he hadn’t the wherewithal to express it, so busy was he half drooling the wisp of a girl idly looking about the general store’s mundane wares.
Al paid cash. He might as well have been invisible. Bringing camping gear and rations for six out front, he messaged, <<Pick us up here – I didn’t shop with hikin’ in mind.>>
