    Alyce
Friday April 9, 2077; Post Field Camp 15, The City, Under the Jungles, Aztlan

Alyce chuckles and shakes her head. ”It seems to me that you might have a minor misunderstanding of just how the fragging Choir works. Some time back, Al and I accompanied one of the Choir members, by the name of Dream, and fought our way through a bunch of vampires and thugs to get the mirror. After we left the place a near smoking ruin, Dream took the mirror somewhere and cut Al and I loose. We had not heard of it again until we all met in Below, where I was tasked with escorting Dream to deposit it in some place that had not yet even been defined, just some nebulous location in the Aztlan jungles.”

She waves her hand about. ”Voila. Apparently, this is the place. Now, remember that Dream is part of the fragging Choir, so he has the same irritating manner of not telling anyone anything that will really be helpful. He likes to do his own thing, as it were, and the rest of us can just bloody well live with it. He is also a powerful mage and did not succumb to the same attacks that killed my own, rather competent mage. She was good, but was overwhelmed early on in the fight by so many enemy mages. In any case, Dream decided that he could do better on his own and he commandeered three of my soldiers and disappeared in the middle of a firefight. Since this pyramid is the place we were headed for, I have to assume that he is headed there, but that is an assumption. And, just in case you don’t completely understand what is happening, we have been fighting this battle for just over three hours. The initial engagements were mages and some ancient warrior types, but they learned soon enough that modern weapons can kill even good mages. We have killed or incapacitated a number of them with grenades, machineguns, assault cannons, and…………..” Alyce holds up her right arm, the micro-thin filament barely visible if one looks closely at it. ”……..sometimes just good old-fashioned hand to hand combat. Soon enough, the mages were sniping at us and throwing scads of the ancient warriors into the fight, but they died even faster. The worst part was seeing our dead companions rise from where they had fallen and attacking us. You may be able to fight a running battle with some sort of unlimited Red Ninja ammunition supply that is always in your weapon or an unlimited amount of magic spells that can overcome what I seriously believe is a very high background count, but then you are immortal. We mere mortals have to rearm and reload ammunition to keep going. As a point of fact, Dream left no real clue as to his destination and for all I know, he may have changed his mind about which pyramid he was looking at. I am going off the best information I have and I expect to make the target pyramid in the next few minutes, with or without your help. My intent is to ascend the pyramid and see what I can find there. If it is some dread ritual that is meant to end the world, then I will once again do my best to stop it, as I have helped do before. If you have any better information about where he might have gone or what we can expect to find, perhaps you could share that information with us. If not, I would ask that you shut the frag up about the shortcomings of my people. Take it out on me later, but these men and women are giving their all for me, not you, not the Choir, not Dream and his stupid bloody mirror. Chastise me in private for my failures. I can certainly use the help you can give me and I am sure that we can work together, but I am too fragging tired to be overly diplomatic about it right now.”

Alyce stops talking and touches the side of her head. >>Zen? Is that you? If you can hear me, we are near the base of the target pyramid and preparing to move there in just a few seconds. Please try to link up with us there, if you can.<<

She stands up and starts to put her helmet on, which causes Rhea to signal her people and everyone rises from their position and prepares to leapfrog forward. Alyce gives Al a look and nods her head. ”Thank you for coming for me, you lovely, lovely man. I love you. Now, will you continue this adventure with me? We may get to see some more monsters. Old times, eh?”

Alyce blows Al a kiss then sets her helmet on her head and nods to Rhea, who gives some silent hand signals, causing men and women to begin moving forward.

Sian nods as she listens to Alyce speak. The other woman is clearly tired and worn to near exhaustion but is still determined to carry on. Impressive. Of course, it would be more impressive if she was sure of her destination. But then, she, Al, and Shrike have been working pretty much without a plan from the beginning. Her eye had caught the almost invisible movement of the horribly dangerous whip hanging from Alyce’s hand and shuddered a bit. She has seen the effect of the weapon in the hands of an experienced user, and it looks a lot like Alyce knows her way around the thing. She also notes the calm professionalism of the soldiers surrounding Alyce and nods. Their losses have apparently been greater than sixty percent and they are still pushing forward. They are also quite well armed and armored for simple mercenary soldiers and she recognizes some of the exposed tattoos. Sian wonders just what this woman is up to by hiring a bunch of Vory soldiers, and not simple thugs, but well trained and equipped men and women.

Still, after all is said, she rather likes Alyce and thinks that maybe they should accompany her. She looks about at her own companions. ”Well, I, for one, think that we should see where she takes us. Are we going with her?”

I held up a hand at the Retreavers tirade: “Just so that there is no missunderstanding: I am in no way attributing incompetence to your pack. Everybody bites as well as they can. Resuplies are necessary. But there is a high chance you are pissing away your only chance to stop another Horror from coming through while you lick your wounds.
My last information was that the mirror has to be retreived to find the locations of the other rituals. We ourselves used the resonance of one of those to hitch a ride to this location. We cut the power spike, so they will have to continue their sacrificies for a while longer, but if they manage to synchronize again to another location they might overwhelm the guardian at the Abyss again.
My main concern is that you have lost connection to that Dream guy at a place where neither the pattern works nor – it seems – micro transceivers.
We need that mirror more than individuals, me and yourself included. So let’s stop yapping at each other and get back to tactics: Your drones are slowing you down in this kind of terrain, stealth is not your forte with the heavy gear and keeping a formation isn’t conductive to that either.
So I suggest, we share commchannels but separate again. You stay defensive and keep them focused on your team. That should give the rest of us a good chance to go after this Dream guy and hopefully stop the ritual with some HE arguments.”

Alyce bristles up, but a touch on her arm from Rhea gets her attention. The two women stare at each other for a few moments, conducting the sort of completely silent communication that has befuddled men ever since women were part of their lives, then Alyce nods before turning back to Shrike. ”My apologies. You are right and I can only lay my shortness with you down to being weary, a dangerous thing, it appears. Of course, I can provide the distraction as we assault the pyramid and hopefully be in time with enough firepower to help stop the ritual and then help with getting all of us the bloody hell out of here. I am sending you my commcodes. Comms seems to be cutting in and out at longer ranges, but are good for short distances. Do you need me to give you a head start or should I begin moving now?”

    Al held up a hand.

It was no coincidence that he had appeared out of time and space here at Alyce’s side. Whatever lay ahead, they were meant to face it together.

“Groovy plan. But this one here knows the Mirror. An’ if I git held up somehow, you’ll need someone else Dream knows an’ trusts. Besides, we’s shared smokes. If’n her crew’s gon’ pull a holdin’ action, Rhea here can lead it. But this one comes with.”

Zen arrives stealthily to the team, and nearly get himself shot by Milos. He looks strange, half transparent, covered in blood to the point that his elf features are obscured. More interestingly, his feet are completely transparent and he appears to be floating above the ground. ”Thank you for not shooting at me… I reprogrammed my RP polymer to look like a blood spirit. It actually fools some of them, I guess they are too busy to take a close look with all the chaos around.”

Milos just swears smartass – but Zen is still alive after passing countless of these things. It wins him some appreciation.

Milo does more than swear at Zen as he lowers his assault cannon. ”That may be smart out there, strange man, but it almost got you killed here. We have been fighting blood mages and blood spirits and my finger was a hair from sending you to your next life, wherever your religion thinks that is. Quit fragging around and get rid of the disguise. It is good that it kept you alive but it will only endanger you here. We are getting ready to move out. Alyce and Rhea are in the center of the perimeter, talking to some newcomers.”

Zen said ”Sorry for almost wasting your bullets Milos… I forgot that I wear it. Zen was in deep sadness, then to himself ”Analog people…” He swapped up the blood spirit disguise into… he thought about it for a moment and decided to go with a nature spirit disguise swapping the reds into greens and browns.

Newcomers? Now? From where? curious Zen makes his way toward the newcomers. Looking for Alyce and Reha. ”Alyce! Reha! “

“Shit, this lost city is busier than the Hot Bucket in Seattle during Christopher Street Day.
Hey, you, Fashion Spirit or whatever your name is. Did you just come from scouting? Is there a safish way to the pyramide a small group could take undetected?”
    I Inquired from the newcomer.

Zen replies ”The best way inside is to let yourself be captured… I have a way to stash weapons, they don’t guard the captured very well as there really is nowhere for them to go… No high-tech gear, no supplies and not enough bullets to hunt for lfood. Where could a prisoner possibly go?”

He then asks in curiosity I am Zen, who are you? I have never seen you before. How did you get here?”

“Shrike. We took the rainbow bridge with just one color.
So in other words: No, you haven’t found a way there. Alright, then let’s make our own path.”
I triggered my own RP cloak, using it as the manufacturer had intended, to blend in with my surroundings. Not that any dual natured freak would be fooled by it, but at least mundane eyes would have to look twice.

“Alrighty, toots,” Al said to Alyce. “Say yer goodbyes an’ look lively, we’s steppin’ off.”

To Rhea he said, “Don’t fret, ol’ Al’s gon’ look after her. Nice meetin’ ya fer two minutes again.”

Alyce nods at Al and turns to give some instructions to Rhea, then simply shakes her head. Rhea is more than capable of getting the remaining expedition members to the pyramid and up it. The two nod at each other, enough said, then Alyce looks at Zen. ”Dream is off on his own with the mirror. I believe that he was making his way to the pyramid and these three friends have come to help us. I am accompanying them and would like for you to remain with Rhea as she supports us and provides cover. She will join us at the top of the pyramid. I would like you to stay with her and lend her your considerable support.”

Turning to Al, Alyce nods that she is ready to move out. Rhea looks at Al and grins. ”It is always so quick with you. I show up and you go away. A girl could get a complex. I know that you will take care of her, but remain as safe as you can.”

“As houses, macho chica sabe. As houses. An’ hey, it ain’t always so quick with ol’ Al.” And with a wink the little man disappeared into the brush with Alyce and her senior never-dies. He figured the next hour would put that nomenclature to the test.

Sian grins into her helmet and glides into the brush after Al and Alyce, expecting Shrike to be following close behind.

Alyce nods and follows Al into the brush, heading off to the pyramid. Two minutes after starting, the ominous sounds of heavy gunfire erupt from behind the small group. She is still close enough to catch most of what is happening on the expedition channel and it appears that a sharp-eyed scout had caught two enemy mages and some warriors moving between buildings and the Bumblebees she had called in had cut the enemy force into pieces. It is a small victory, but a victory nevertheless. It is hard to believe that the enemy can have as many mages as they do, but so far the supply seems to be infinite.

She hears Rhea establish fire control procedures and seconds later, Alyce loses the signal in static. She sends a prayer to her friend and their companions and pushes onward with Al.

Al liked the jungle. It was different here than what he was used to in Southeast Asia. He’d never been to Central or South America. Didn’t even know which one he was in now. And even if he did, he wouldn’t assume anything he saw now was natural – at least no more natural than red-lit underground cities in giant caverns. But it was still jungle, and he liked it. The whole place still made him feel like he’d been gut-punched, but that wasn’t the jungle’s fault. To the contrary, the myriad aromas, sounds, and colors. The closeness of the air, and its taste, it all helped to center him. Even the eruptions of gunfire, some close, some distant, added a sense of familiarity.

Balancing care with haste, he led the quartet around and up a small escarpment. Belly down on the crest, they were close enough to the obsidian pyramid to make out the moss growing on the ancient steps. Below them, stripped prisoners were being marched inside. Lots of bad guys around. He didn’t see Dreamy. It was the only entrance they could see, but that wasn’t to say there weren’t more.

They had some tough calls to make. He hoped they could make them with their heads, but with half their number equipped with uteruses, he doubted that was likely.

His voice was a hoarse whisper. “Reckon those poor fellers gon’ git they hearts cut out or somethin’. Question is, do we move now an’ spring the survivors? Way ol’ Al sees it, the long game’s the ritual. But ever’ one o’ them gits they blood spilled makes the bad guys stronger. I’m thinkin’ in this case the right thing an’ the smart thing’re one an’ the same. We rescue as many o’ these guys as we can, an’ that de-juices they sorcery while takin’ out a chunk o’ they security assets. Plus a straight line ta the ritual is the fastest way ta git there.”

“Agreed.” I replied, not mentioning, that people killed outside ritual blood letting would be useless for the blood sorcerers, so having them be cut down during an escape attempt was accepably effective too.
“Sian, I hope you are topped of on your blood reserves, otherwise you have now the opportunity to fill up. “

Sian chuckles softly. ”No, I have room for some good old-fashioned blood sucking. If the supply is as ready as it seems to be, I can consume and use it to power my magic, too. Please try to be sure that we cut the heads off anyone I drain, just in case.” She pauses as she observes the goings on below. ”So, what is our play here? I can Cleanse and hopefully reduce the background count to an acceptable number for me and try to cast some spells. I will need to use spells of high force, though, just to try to get something useful. I can try for some Invisibility spells to help us get closer and then do something else. I am also not too bad with my knife.”

Alyce grimaces and shudders a bit at the cavalier mention of sucking blood. Like most people, she has a great distrust in vampires, but Sian has shown herself to be somewhat non-traditional in that aspect. Still……………………..

She touches Al on the shoulder and points off to a building just below them and just off from the pyramid ramp. ”Is that spot mostly hidden from their prying eyes or am I seeing something wrong?” She moves her hands and sends a holo-link to each HUD display indicating a route that her sensors have indicated might be feasible. ”We might be able to get down there without being seen by taking the route I have just sent each of you. I am effectively blind out beyond that short distance, though, so I am not sure if there is someone watching the location from just beyond my somewhat shortened sensor range. What do you guys see? Is it clear?”

“Looks clear ta me,” Al replied after a scan through his rifle scope. “An’ sure wouldn’t hurt ta be a mite closer in afore we kick things off. Reckon I’d like ta be a long gun fer this here show, but was worried about slowin’ things down comin’ all the way down off’n this bluff once we’s ready ta make entry. But if we can stage at that buildin’, I can set up on the roof, be ready ta reach out an’ touch some folks once you all close in.”

The sound of heavy machinegun and assault cannon fire reaches the ears of the four on the bluff and Alyce chuckles. ”Sounds like Rhea is making good time and is only a few minutes behind us. She may run into stiffer defenses the closer she gets, but we would be remiss if we were not to take advantage of her distraction. Time to save the world again.”

Grinning into her helmet, Alyce slips over the edge of the bluff, her somewhat limited sensors being aided by her very good natural senses as she maneuvers quietly down the slope, following the route she had pointed out to the others. Once at the bottom, she steps aside to let the next person come down behind her. Alyce deploys her whip and takes up a position where she can “watch” an angle of approach to where she is.
