As they made their final approach to the obsidian pyramid a sonorous boom thundered out across the cavern, almost as if skulls had been smashed in to a giant kettle drum, which was pretty much what it was. As one the warriors all looked up to the top of the pyramid and the invaders used the opportunity to make a bolt for the dead zone that Alyce had identified, scrambling in to cover just as the column of captives once more began to trudge upwards to their presumed doom. From this side there wasn’t a handy staircase to carry the group upwards but the stepped pyramid was hardly unclimbable…it was uncomfortably cold, more so than one would expect as if it was actively draining the warmth from those that touched it and their breath fogged in its vicinity. The drums thundered out once more and then began to pick up pace…whatever was happening it was ramping up!

Sian slides down the last few feet to the cover of the building just as the giant drum went off the first time. Peering around the corner lets her see that the way past here is clear, for now. She motions to the pyramid and sends a soft message to her companions. ”Hey, it looks like the side of the pyramid is clear. No steps, but the ledges should be easy enough to climb. We might get to the top without being seen.”

<<Let’s do it. Damn. That thing wakes some really uncomfortable memories.>>
I pushed back the memories of the Sleeper and focused on climbing up, then extending a hand down to help the others up with expediency and speed. The magic users still flinched as usual, but not as much – probably because the high positive BGC overwhelmed what my void could suck away.
I was actually breathing hard when I helped Al up the penultimate step.
<<Time collect yourself. It’s going to be a downhill battle with precious little escape routs.>>

Sian is also breathing hard when the group reaches the next to last step. The climb had been hard, even for one of her strength and stamina and she can see that Alyce is taking it harder, despite her significant gymnastic ability and physical conditioning. Sian nods a silent thank you to Shrike and waits for the rest. ”Whew! That was some climb. As for the rest of the journey, I am not really looking for an exit route until we finish our task. As a side note, it is extremely unlikely that I will be able to get much Essence refreshing here as it takes a minute to get each bit and I am pretty sure that we do not have that time. Perhaps at the end I can sup on one of these mages down there.”

Alyce lets Shrike and Al help her up the last block and sits with her back to the remaining wall. She looks about, sending her senses scanning outward. ”Alright, the steps just around the corner are crowded with prisoners and a few warriors as guards. I believe that we can surprise them and take them, sowing confusion as we proceed further in.”

Squatting next to Alyce with his back against the cold wall, Al was fiddling with something inside the heavy shoulder bag he carried. “Half a tick,” he whispered sotto voce. “Last time we played this game, big ass charge came in real handy….There. Ready.” He stood and gave Alyce a hand up. “We git ta ground zero, well, I’ll make sure it’s ground zero in more senses than one. Heh heh.”

He left the APDS in his rifle, but silently swapped clips on his shotgun – these primitives weren’t wearing armor. He widened the choke on the weapon. Then he reached into a cargo pocket on his fatigues and pulled out a handful of compact cylinders, handily color- and surface texture-coded for concussion, anti-personnel and heavy explosive. “Now, yer talkin’ about sowin’ some confusion, reckon we lead with these….Start with these pink-fer-pussy flashbangs so as not ta waste any sacrificial victims, then we can follow up with my friends the reds an’ blacks as the situation requires.”

Alyce grins at Al as she grabs his arm and stands up, then waits as the man checks his ammunition loads. ”Thanks. Let’s get the job done.” She sends a silent command to her hand and her whip spools out. ”I’m ready for this.”

With a silent “whirr” sound the drum on my gun turned position, so that it was positioned to flechette.
I nodded to Alyce: “Do your captured people know a signal to drop prone? That would be ideal to just hose down their captors with suppressive fire.”

Alyce nods in response to Shrike’s question. ”Yes, they do, but there are far more people in the sacrifice line than just my soldiers. They must have been grabbing the locals for some time to have this many. If you use that thing, we may be mowing down more than the guards. Still, I can give the signal when you are ready and we will trust that others might follow the lead of the soldiers.”

“Time’s a’wastin’ folks. Drums o’ Doom beatin’ louder, an’ someone’s bound ta spot us any moment now.” Sometime while speaking Al had already popped the tops on the two pink cylinders, and with the seconds already ticking down, he leaned around the corner to roll one toward the stairs and toss the second to the top of the steps.

“Fire inna hole, amigos,” he grinned.

Alyce looks around with her reduced sensors and her own senses and smiles with a sort of mirthless grin. ”However, it appears that there is a small knot of warriors and one person who might be a mage just inside the top floor room. They are apparently guiding the prisoners to a set of stairs leading down into the pyramid. I will give you the chance to do your mayhem to them.”

She nods at Al after he tosses the devices and gives him a genuine smile She waits the few moments for the explosions before leaping around the corner and racing towards the double line of prisoners and guards. She is calling out commands in Russian, the volume of her voice amplified several times by the armored helmet she is wearing. If any of the captured Vory and EVO soldiers in the lines are surprised at her appearance at the top of the pyramid, their discipline does not show it. A number of men and women react almost instantly to her words and fall to the ground, dragging any other prisoners they can reach with them.

Alyce charges directly at one of the guards, her monofilament whip flashing briefly in the artificial light of the cavern. The chaos resulting from Al’s grenades means that the ancient warrior before her barely has time to hold an arm up before it and his upper torso are sliced away from the rest of his body. A mere couple of seconds later and a second guard drops to the ground, his neck spouting arterial blood and his head rolling down the pyramid, bouncing in some sort of macabre display from step to step. Alyce brings her arm back for another swing as her sensors tell her that her companions are joining the fray.

Sian has watched the others prepare for the battle and has cleansed herself as much as possible. The result is a net in her favor of eight, meaning that her Foci are active, even if only barely. Sian shrugs off the drain from the Cleanse. She does expect that the background count will increase when they enter the pyramid itself, but for now, she will take advantage of what she has.

Sian leaps around the corner, her sacred blade cutting into one of the stunned warrior guards, practically eviscerating him. Without pause, she is on another guard, cutting him down as well.

As the group decides on a daring raid, Zen realizes that he has little to offer to be low on ammo, and unskilled with firearms. Instead, he decides to go find Dream. None of them seems to take him seriously anyhow, or even suggest that he joins them.
However, without Dream and his mirror, the trip is for nothing. Foolish Caroline that got into this murder for science – there is only one real goal for any things people do. The rest are rationalizations. He switches to his blood spirit disguise, and carefully looks for his unusual friend, fearing the worst due to the background count, and hostiles. It is not like Dream to disappear so he may be in dire need of help, and Petal cannot help him with such a terrible background count.

The progress of the remainder of the team is slow but steady as they depart the rest area. Disciplined soldiers provide cover for their teammates as they bound forward. Sporadic gunfire erupts from the near distance in several directions, indicating that there are still other pockets of soldiers fighting to get to the objective. A forward scout spots a group of about twenty warriors escorting two mages and summons some air support. The two remaining Bumblebee drones immediately fly to the scout’s location and the sound of machinegun fire erupts. By the time the rest of the team arrives at the location, the warriors and guards are dead, several cut nearly in two by the MMG fire.

Rhea advances on the grisly scene to make sure that the two mages are dead and notices that they are a bit older than most of those they have encountered. Perhaps that would explain the size of their warrior escort. Grinning, she realizes that she does not really care. Two dead enemy mages is still two dead enemy mages and the result is even better if they are……were……senior in rank. Finished, she gives the hand signals that gets her team moving again.

Two minutes later, a scout reports in, telling Rhea that a column of warriors and at least one mage is approaching them from the direction of the pyramid. A quick ambush is set and the cacophony of fire erupts, engulfing the unfortunate warriors with concentrated assault cannon, machinegun, and small arms fire. As Rhea inspects the resulting carnage a few second later, she grins. If this is not giving Alyce her distraction, nothing will.

She turns to Zen, noticing that he has left the group. A bit miffed, she tries the team net, hoping that the man is still in range of her comms. >>Zen? Please return to the group. I need your analysis of the situation.<<

I stepped calmly around the corner and used the chaos of the flash bangs to shoot the two warriors who brought up the rear of the captive column.
A mental command changed the choke to ultra wide – not particularly effective at the current distance – if my targets had worned body armor.
Obviously I also hit a few of the captive soldiers, but their armor kept the worst of the effect away, reducing the needles to blunt impacts. Another guard went down while the accompanying mage weathered the metal storm thanks to some kind of armor magic.
    “Get down” I called afterwards…

Both Alyce and Sian hear the command in Shrike’s voice and drop to the ground, Alyce still calling out to her men in the line, giving what orders she could.

Al heard Shrike as well, but then he’d never really gotten up. After throwing the grenades, he’d crested the final step and gone prone with his rifle, sniping any strays that looked as though they might get the jump on any of his companions in the fray. So at Shrike’s word he simply rolled back down to the penultimate step and switched to his shotgun, ready to going the general rumpus once the never-die did whatever he was going to do.

The retaliation for my actions came at once: The armored mage made a gesture and hurled a firelance at my position. The void ate some of the force and allowed me to duck to the side. It was high time to get close and personal. I dropped the autoshotgun in its sling and charged. The mage seemed to have overdone it a bit with that spell as he was bleeding from the nose. I didn’t pause to let him refocus himself. Instead I flew at him, grabbed his outstreched arm and ducked into a complicated roll. I heard ligaments tear as I wrenched the man over my back and pivoted him from the broad step of the pyramide down to the steps below. He managed to fall two more steps, bouncing with bone crushing force from level to level.
Nothing magic armor could do about good old gravity.
Of course now I was among the captives without a clear line of sight, lying on my back. And already two irrate warriors with long spears came running to my position to introduce me to their pointy ends…

Al waited two ticks for whatever scorched-earth move Shrike had warned them about, but grew impatient and took a peek. Alyce and Sian were both on the ground, but Al figured they all must have misinterpreted Redback’s command, because instead of some hellfire AOE attack, the psycho had launched himself into the midst of their foes. He had to remind himself that this was not a team player or leader like Rick or Isaint, but a lone wolf wild card with what Al suspected was a repressed death wish. Well, he’d have to die on his own time…knowing the never-die’s armor would shrug off his buckshot like so many fruit flies, he unloaded two cartridges at the backs of the elf’s spear-wielding assailants, dropping them in piles of mangled humanity.

They’d spent enough time on this fracas outside. Too much time. He ran for the stairs and started up them….”Up an’ at ’em, ladies.”

If both women were a bit confused at the situation, it is understandable. They had expected some sort of explosion or other extremely lethal event after Shrike’s warning, but nothing happened other than the man racing up to one of the mages and tossing him down the steps. Both were quick to stand up after Al’s words and they followed him into the room at the top of the pyramid, stepping over several bodies. Alyce recognized one of her soldiers, who was just finishing off one of the guards and spoke to him in Russian, so that there would be no misunderstanding of her orders. ”Ivan, you are to gather what you can of our people here and wait for Rhea Kynn. She is approaching the pyramid with a number of our people. Try to assist her in taking control of the steps.” The man nods and grabs up one of the fallen spears before leaving the room and heading out to see what he could do.

During this exchange, Sian had quickly looked about to be sure that there were no enemies still active here. She tugs on Alyce’s arm and the two follow Al.

With the sound of the drums resounding in their ears the team looked down on the ritual circle deep below them through a whirling haze of blood that formed a roughly spherical dome over proceedings. They could dimly make out a statue vaguely reminiscent of the Aztech pantheon mixed with an uncomfortable amount of Lovecraftian madness. In one paw, tentacle, appendage they could see the Mirror of Demthshak, the figure with one hand pressed against it might be Dream… three other priests could be seen directing their mute sacrifices forwards through a free standing stone arch on the rim of the ritual barrier. The arch itself depicted horrific scenes of slaughter mingled with runes that twisted and warped under the gaze inducing a deep sense of dread and nausea. Flanking the entrance were two of the biggest blood spirits that anyone had been unfortunate enough to encounter…
