* Coleman: Sam is a distraction. Her goals clearly didn’t align with ours, and she is in no condition to help even if we could trust her.
* Eliza: Empathy can be a powerful force.
* Gamma: If I had shot her right away, others might have considered that murder and objected.
* Coleman: As I’m not running this team, I have to accept the delay. Priority remains making sure we are not surprised by a trap.
Preston had been relieved when Al’s truck plowed its way through the junk, but dismayed when the man’s priority turned out to be saving Sam. Glad that he had a balaclava hiding his facial expression, Preston shifted position a bit to where he could scan the team and the Gaz. It took him a few meters farther from the others than he’d have preferred — but the artifact was in the Gaz so it had to be watched, and the entire team was likely needed to complete this mission so being able to give them some warning was also key.
<<Team [Preston] Staying on overwatch. Please be quick. >>
* Monkey: You know, if I’d been the one giving first aid to Sam, she might have thanked me with a kiss.
* Gamma: I never have put much effort into learning first-aid. Easing her injuries enough that she was in a kissing mood seems unlikely.
* Oleg: “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” And keeping her alive might bring a lot of suffering, the woman seems to lack second thoughts.

Noir let’s Al put on the bio-monitor and thanks him for his help: “You are a good man Al.” A pained yelp escapes her as Al prods at her legs. “Although I wouldn’t call you a gentle man.” The reading confirms that the legs are without circulation, otherwise, the output of the thing is confusing as it seems to have trouble with its diagnosis – essentially it’s wondering why Noir is as alive as she is. Still, Al manages to take the pain far enough away that he can tourniquet the legs, allowing the moving of the cube.
Noir throws a withering look at Becky and her question: “IT’S FRAGGING RAINING LIKE A MOTHERFRAGGER. How are beings of fire supposed to do anything while being wracked with pain worse then I’m enduring here. Also even if it wasn’t raining what possible use would my fire spirits be to move this three ton block? They can’t lift it and if they tried to burn it away, they would fry me. So they are currently back at their metaplane where they belong, waiting for my call.”
By now a deep puddle has formed and the hard packed earth gets easier to move by the second. While Al worked, Noir had made a bit of headway, especially now that her pain seems to have subsided.January 10, 2019 at 5:14 pm #13812
Becky says ”Oh shut up. It is not wet in the astral, what is the deal? Who are you really?”January 10, 2019 at 5:31 pm #13816
* Eliza: Al is long on empathy. He might not write off a lost cause for a long while.
* Gamma: But he’s doing the first aid, we won’t know if she is a lost cause.
* Monkey: A little hacking & cracking might be in order!
* Coleman: I’m on overwatch, I shouldn’t distract myself.
* Oleg: Trying to care for a dying woman, who was volatile at the best of times, will be an ongoing distraction
* Coleman: AR only so I can still watch, and more importantly anyone looking will see that I’m still watching.
Still scanning visually, Preston brings up AR and takes a quick poke at the med-kit to see if he can gather information from it. However the ‘kit turns out to have sophisticated security that would take a much more determined effort to hack.
* Monkey: Medical Confidentiality? What a crock!
Preston quickly re-boots his deck, hoping that amidst everything else Al doesn’t notice the security blip.

Al had done what he’d needed to do. They’d shared smokes, after all.
But the readings on the medkit gave him pause. He rapidly detached the leads and stepped out of the field. She wouldn’t kill herself by getting free, now. And it looked like she’d be able to do that soon enough.
Other more pressing errands called.
But what were they leaving at their backs? Probably just good old bring-on-the-demonic-possession Noir, but…He subvocalized a voice-to-text and attached the medkit readings, sending to the team <<Maybe I see what y’all were hesitatin’ over…in case ya can’t read that data, it’s basically sayin’ she shouldn’t be conscious, but she is…reckon she’s good on her own from here…what say we call it good and beat feet?>>January 10, 2019 at 5:50 pm #13826
“And what good would my spirits do me in the astral? What do you want from me?”Spoiler:January 10, 2019 at 6:33 pm #13829
Al studied the faces of Ichante, Preston, and Becky as rain pelted them all mercilessly, each drop a reminder of the urgency of their next task.
They all seemed convinced Noir was some sort of threat, but all he saw was a woman with a whole hell of a lot more power than social skills. Given over to Satan, sure? But aside from being wildly antagonistic, her only earthly crime had been to scare the hell out of the others with her mad summoning juice. More than that, she’d put down their opposition here, and at great personal cost.
To him, the grilling and ominous comments looked like a paranoid witch hunt. The weird medkit read hadn’t helped that, but he was with these people, and he wasn’t going to hold info back from them. Ichante certainly knew more about hexes and idolatry than he did – maybe she was onto something – but he didn’t see it. He saw a hurt ally, a countdown to otherplanar Armageddon, and what looked like a seething mob. Three shadows surrounding prone prey, occasionally backlit by a flash of lightning.
Even stabilized, he wouldn’t for a second countenance leaving her here under any other circumstances – but they had no time, and he needed these others. Getting them on their way to the farm and at the same time away from Noir seemed like the best stone with which to kill both birds….January 10, 2019 at 7:22 pm #13830
Becky replies ”You always had a channeled spirit inside, most of the time you had like the most powerful spirit I ever encountered inside. Next day, you go out killing vampires alone without any of your bound spirits, you don’t even use them in combat. Moreso, you developed physical durability overnight which is more than I did on a lifetime of physical exercise. You survive a direct hit from a smart weapon platform, and after that, you survive getting struck by a cube that weights what 800kg? A ton? The biomonitor says that you should not be talking to us. Yet you are far from disabled, you talk coherently, and even struggle to free yourself.
So, since you clearly were not this durable yesterday, and since your spirits are unexplainably gone there are two options that I can think off. Either you made a spirit pact with one of the spirits from the Pyramid, or perhaps somehow you are one of these spirits. Look no judgment there either way. It is just that I want to know what to expect when we return to Maria. She is in trouble by the way – perhaps because of us – but perhaps because of you.”January 10, 2019 at 8:17 pm #13834
And just like that, Becky showed her cards.
Some of it Al had known, some was new. But the way she laid it out, it made a certain sense. He’d been right to share the medkit feed….
But if Noir was in cahoots with whatever freaks were in the Pyramid, why had she come after the vampires? To pull them away from the farm? For that all she’d needed was the hostage story and driving away in her little race car – no need to get herself banged up taking on a nest of spec ops undead. To get rid of the linens that held the Pyramid’s secrets? But she’d gone right by them, leaving intact what she could have incinerated with a gesture.
He could see why the others were suspicious, but there was still no meat to it….
Eager as he was to get out of here, he waited for Noir’s next verbal volley….January 11, 2019 at 1:00 am #13837
“What exactly are you accusing me of? That I survived being shot at? That I’m not dead yet? That you suck at reading auras? You’ve wanted me dead before, but this is frankly ridiculous. It is none of your business how I achieve my results
Maria has been and is my client and I fulfilled my obligations to her by killing the people who killed her man.
If Maria is in trouble it’s far more likely that one of you money grubbing, conscienceless sellswords has sold her out – wittingly or unwittingly.
And instead of helping her you stand around here, hopping with glee that you found me in a vulnerable position. You disgust me.
Right now you are waisting everyone’s time. If you were really concerned about Maria, you’d already be on your way.
Don’t project your pettiness onto me, when I am the one – besides Al, maybe – who was and is standing up for her and her interests.”January 11, 2019 at 1:58 am #13838
Becky says ”Shut up Sam. Do you want to trade information for your freedom or not? Frankly, I couldn’t care less if you are a flesh spirit or if you are in bed with them, NOBODY has to suffer indefinitely for the greater good. There is no moral judgement here, I just need information. Now speak up because this aggression is annoying and we really are in a hurry. “

“I have no idea whatsoever what to expect at the farm. You left after me. And unlike you I wasn’t in contact with the farm since I left. So how the frag should I know?
Why are you even bothering? Wasn’t it your priority to sell the artifact and fullfil your obligations to your Johnson?
I came here to slay vampires and hopefully rescue the hostages. It saddens me that I only managed to do the former.
But I had nothing to do with whatever is going on at the farm.”
Sam panted with the effort of digging, but did not relent.January 11, 2019 at 4:46 am #13841
Becky replies ”No, we are going to forget the job and return the seal to its place. Maria is in deep shit, and perhaps Texas and Atzlan as well. This is too extreme for half a million nuyen pay. Can you help us place the Ball in its original location? I mean you are the expert on these manners. “ She observed Sam carefully trying to gauge how truthful she is, there was nothing concrete just bits and pieces and they did not have time to argue.

Al squatted back down and started scooping mud away from around Noir’s legs, his scarred hands thrusting easily into the rapidly moistening earth. It was more a show of sympathy than anything – there were much more effective ways to extract her, and that wasn’t really his goal. At least not yet. He was incredibly relieved at Becky’s last statement. But he had one last question of his own.
“An’ one more thing….we only found the mother….”January 11, 2019 at 5:56 am #13848
“Yes, that vile little bastard had cut her throat just as I came in, but I didn’t see any children around. All I know is that the mage did not have them with him while I gave chase.”
She looked Becky squarely in the eye when she replied: “I am not a specialist for artifacts. I speak with the dead, not magical objects.
But I doubt it will be that easy. Putting the stopper back when the Champaign is already flowing isn’t trivial.
I will help you though, if only to prevent the end of the world.”
To Becky’s ears the words are sincere.January 11, 2019 at 7:00 am #13850
It was looking like there were no kids – if there had been, they’d have had their throats slit for the extra juju just like the woman. It was what Al had to believe at the moment, if he was going to focus on the bigger issue.
He stood up and subvocalized his vote to the team. <<Hate ta be a Fickle Filly, but now ol’ Al’s gut’s sayin’ we bring her with us. Somethin’ tells me she’s got a part to play in all o’ this. But if’n y’all don’t agree, then better we make sure she doesn’t fallow, cuz we don’t need a fly inna ointment. That case, I’d say leave her stuck here an’ disable her car – with the dracs dead, she should be safe enough until she can dig herself free. I’ll leave it to y’all – but let’s decide an’ git movin’.>>January 11, 2019 at 11:42 am #13852
* Oleg: If we don’t kill the witch, we’ll regret it.
* Eliza: Al seems far better with people than I am, I would trust his judgement in this above my own.
<<Team [Preston] I’ll back Al on this. Although not with enthusiasm.>>
* Gamma: We can’t fit the four of us and an injured Sam into the Gaz, unless someone is in the back, in the storm.
* Coleman: I don’t like having only part of a team watching Sam. Although if she is not with Al, maybe an ‘accident’ could happen.
* Oleg: It would be craven to kill her after agreeing to take her, and dishonorable and dangerous to lie to Al about it. Better to finish it now.
* Gamma: I may be one of the worst to guard her, not having magic.
<<Team [Preston] If we are taking her it means at least two vehicles. Other vehicles may not travel as quick as the Gaz with Al at the wheel, so it slows us down unless we split up, but it is what it is, and Jazz needs her van anyway. How about Sam goes in the van, Jazz sets a drone to deal with Sam if she causes problems, and Ichante and/or Becky ride there too, to keep an eye on her. Rest go in the Gaz to guard the other item of interest.>>
Then Preston called his car to the front of the scrapyard, in hopes of pulling together more of his kit in one place.

Becky texts >> I am all for the van with Jazz, though I’d feel safer not to have her alone in the car with Jazz, and once we’re there I would like to get out of the car. I am not sure that mojo can help with crushed legs, she may need a hospital, isn’t it so? I am thinking of putting her in the Armadillo alone and having her astrally projecting. The armadillo can take her to the hospital or to a shadow clinic – depending on how legal she is.
Becky says to Sam ”I am afraid that the dead played you. Not sure why though, but it got you hot enough to come alone so it worked.” Without dwelling on that issue she asks ”Can you astrally project? Even if we can lift the cube you are in no condition to physically fight. We’ll just need some guidance. “January 11, 2019 at 2:43 pm #13865
“I can project, though it is dangerous to project into unstable areas. Especially with a damaged body. But I’ll do what I can to help you. Just get the thing off of me.”
Noir replys, now much calmer that the meds have taken the edge of her pain.January 11, 2019 at 2:57 pm #13867
Becky asks the team ”How do we free her?” She looks at the cube thinking if she is strong enough to move it enough for someone to pull Noir out, or if there is a crane with a large magnet nearby.
