What kind of traffic are we in? Are we on the freeway on the way to the airport? Or are we in red-light traffic on city streets?
Long story short, what are our surroundings like? I’m trying to get a sense if traffic is crawling along or if we’re in stop-and-go traffic.
(FYI, I have a post at the bottom of the previous OOC page that I posted immediately prior to this.)January 31, 2019 at 1:10 pm #15520
I don’t think I made it as clear as I should have in my last IC post, but Jawsey was doing short astral trips as they drove along — that was what I meant by “I’m going to start popping in and out of the astral.” (there is not much point to looking around astrally inside the car, the interesting part was whether there was a spirit following them. So he’d go out of the car, look around, then come back before he loses track of which car is which).
I’m going to IC another jaunt, and him not having looked for a little bit as it seems they are maybe going faster now, so he might have missed the bikers pulling up near them.

@jack_spade turning bike riders into critters, even for a turn, is evil and terrifying and I love it. But huge props on the Beluga comment, you made me snort laughter with that one!January 31, 2019 at 3:39 pm #15532
I aim to please 😉January 31, 2019 at 5:23 pm #15539
Okay: In the astral there are two spirits that engage Jawsei as he takes a peek. (Unless he rushes to his body).
In meat space, the smoke is regular smoke, which causes -6 visibility difficulties unless you have thermal vision.
The driver, (Mato?) should perform a driving test threshold 3 (potentially with -6 dice penalty) to remain in control with the car.January 31, 2019 at 5:28 pm #15542
Any background count here? (just figuring out dice pools ….)January 31, 2019 at 5:38 pm #15543
No BGC.January 31, 2019 at 6:19 pm #15547
OK, I don’t know when I’m going to be able to sit down and make all the rolls, but Jawsey is going to try to take out at least one of them (using edge like it is going out of style), because if both of these materialize we are apt to have trouble.
Jawsey will be using edge on init (haven’t decided yet if to go first, or blitz), then edging an attack roll on one spirit (and I haven’t decided yet between pre-edging and re-rolling fails), hoping to take it out with an alpha-strike.January 31, 2019 at 7:31 pm #15548February 1, 2019 at 2:22 am #15552
If I may, I’ll repeat my questions from above:
What kind of traffic are we in? Are we on the freeway on the way to the airport? Or are we in red-light traffic on city streets? What are our surroundings like? I’m trying to get a sense of overall speed, room to maneuver, obstacles, etc. Are we talking about +4 threshold from the Terrain Modifiers Table from page 201?
Is the -6 from Heavy Smoke and, if so, does the thermographic vision in his glasses reduce that to -3, or is it thermal smoke?
Here’s just the straight roll: Reaction 8 + Pilot Ground Craft 1 + Specialization 2 – Visibility 6: 5d6t5 1 hit
Not sure if that counts as his first initiative pass or if it happens before then. Here’s Mato’s initiative roll:
Initiative: 1d6+14 18February 1, 2019 at 3:32 am #15553
Light traffic, high-way there are plenty of cars but no traffic jam. Thermo vision means that the smoke is of little consequence (get the 6 dice back).
(This is how the bikers target you). If you fail roll edge to see if the uncontrolled car smashes into something or if you lucked out and nothing happens.February 1, 2019 at 3:34 am #15555
So in meat space:
Initiative 18 Mato.
Initiative 16 Biker leader (dual natured)
Initiative 13 (for simplicity) 4 bikers.
Need to roll for:
20: Spirit 1
14: spirit 2
Need to roll for Jawsey:February 1, 2019 at 9:16 am #15573
Maximizing odds of 3 actions seems more important than being 100% sure of going first, so Jawsey will blitz:
init blitz: 10+5d6 31 nice start!
He has 13 dice when attacking with his weapon focus. I think the reach is 1 on the sword cane (I missed writing it down, but I know it has some reach). So -1 defense for the spirit.
No pre-edge, will likely re-roll fails.
astral combat: 13d6t5 7 Hunh, Orokos is running hot right now, so that is already over his limit of 6.
Hmm, I’d like to keep all the successes, so will post edge (I forget what it is called, where you roll your edge dice (with exploding sixes) and remove the limit.
astral combat post edge: 4d6h5 0
OK, at least he gets his seven successes.
DV is 11, assuming he hits.February 1, 2019 at 11:03 am #15574
Which one he attacks? Yhe dual natured biker or one of the spirits?February 1, 2019 at 11:42 am #15575
Sadly, in my IC I mentioned him going after a spirit. It would have made more sense to attack the dual-natured biker who is likely the summoner, but I was reacting to the IC originally, which only mentioned the spirits. Maybe next pass if he is still in the fight by then.February 1, 2019 at 12:24 pm #15578
Here’s Mato’s remaining six dice for driving with thermographic vision:
Thermographic Vision 6: 6d6t5 3 hits
Pretty good. Combined with the earlier roll, that makes 4 hits total. That should be enough to perform Easy or Average driving tasks (threshold 1 or 2) in a Restricted (“light traffic”) terrain environment (+2 threshold).
If things get really hairy, maybe I’ll fork over the karma for Steely Eyed Wheelman. An earlier version of Mato had it until I dropped it in favor of Redliner.
What’s the range to the bikers? Are any of them close enough to get side-swiped or are they all acting (e.g. firing) from a distance?
Does the driving test count as Mato’s first initiative pass or did the driving test occur prior to rolling initiative?February 1, 2019 at 2:22 pm #15583
No. You have an action I gave them a free action to use smoke so it is only fair. They are very close as you are within there smoke cloud. Say 4 meters or less.February 1, 2019 at 2:49 pm #15584
Okay: Jawsey’s whooping attack at Init 31:
Evade + full defense: 18d6t5 4
so you hit with +3 net hits.
resist damage: 6d6t5 2
spirit takes 12 damage and is disrupted.
Fix: Forgot about reach – but the spirit is still disrupted so doesn’t matter.
The second spirit would try to strike back.
Astral combat: 12d6t5 4
Damage is 6 Physical, resisted by willpower.February 1, 2019 at 3:04 pm #15585
Alright, sounds like Mato keeps the Americar under control.
Mato @ 18
I’m going to preemptively declare Evasive Driving (from p. 205), which is like Full Defense except it uses Intuition instead of Willpower. That will drop Mato’s initiative to 8.
As a Free Action, Mato will order the Americar to lower the driver’s side window. The idea will be to attack out of it at a later point, although I’ll understand if the GM wants to wait until the second initiative pass or even second combat turn for the window to be actually open.February 1, 2019 at 3:23 pm #15586
Separately, I think Astral Combat is niche but underappreciated. Case in point: Jawsey one-shotting an F6 spirit on Full Defense. Pity there isn’t anyone else to see it ICly.
Also, I’m not even sure Beta rolled his full dice pool. I think he left off 1 die for his weapon focus, which applies in astral combat too (see page 320). So he could have killed it even more dead.
