Jack, I’m a bit confused about next steps. Did the certification just happen? Do I need to roll to hit any targets or anything? Is the certification for all weapons or is there a separate one for rifles?

“I do know what you mean!” Mato readily agrees. “Plus nothing says style like self-defense with a precious stone. Who cares if they’re synthetic. And you can say, ‘No, it’s not bloody, it’s a ruby!'” He laughs.

The comment about ‘scalp takers’ is a bit much but he’ll let it slide mostly because he’s never seen a sapphire knife in person and he really wants one.

Mato accepts the P118 pre-loaded with gel, and also pockets the extra magazines of explosive ammo.

“Hamington wants me to do a walkabout to familiarize myself with the house. I’ll come back after breakfast for the certification on the shooting range before the daily briefing.”

Hey, I was digging through old threads when I found the original (Lorebane’s) house rules. I know he had specific ones for magic (and something else?) but I only have the General doc.

I uploaded it here. I deleted some commentary for new players, like explaining Sum-to-10. It could probably benefit from some more formatting but it’s late right now:

    https://stormy-waters-2075.obsidianportal.com/wikis/the-found-arcana-general-house-rules

Option for Jack: Lorebane reduced the price of Adept Ways to 15 karma. Bobby just picked up The Beast’s Way for 15 karma – taking a discount because he already had a mentor spirit – but in theory he could take the house rule price and reduce it to 10 karma.

Also, Jack said that Bobby would be applying his discounts to “Astral Perception, Killing Hands and Combat Sense”. This would actually free up 1.0 power point, not just the 0.5 that Bobby spent on Keratin Control, so Bobby has another 0.5 PP floating around to spend.

Mato/Ignacio tuts pleasantly at the joke. “Heh, yes, an L-shaped piece of soap. Very droll.”

He follows Brad and accepts the gun, syncing it with his PAN. Once he’s connected to the icon, he follows Brad’s instructions, mentally signalling a burst at each of the ever-smaller targets in turn. Then he lowers the weapon.

“I guess you just need to trust the friend/foe designation, and hope your wireless security is up to snuff. And if it doesn’t work… you can always hit throw it at them.

“Speaking of throwing… and contingency plans… is there anything available with a sharp point?”

Mato returns the greeting. “Severo. Ignacio Severo. It’s a pleasure, Brad.” He’s a bit relieved that not everyone is stiff and formal.

“Not implanted – my eyes are one of the few organic bits I have left – but I already have the contacts and the trodes to support a smartlink.”

He decides to talk shop, both because Brad seems receptive – well, friendly enough to introduce himself, at least – but also to start build some personal connections. It will make the week easier, and Mato is finally coming around to the concept of ‘you are who you know’.

“We don’t get many Walthers on this side of the pond,” he says. “The Savalette is a fine weapon – superior to the Predator in almost every way except magazine capacity – just as long as you’re willing to do the maintenance on the micro-gyro system.” This is said in sympathy, with the understanding that it would be the responsibility of Brad.

“How do the guests react to a monster like the Savalette? I would think that it’s intimidating but maybe it’s reassuring.

“And tell me more about the P118. How’s the response without the trigger? It reduces the unpredictability from muzzle pull, I bet.” This is a statement of the obvious, but gives Brad an easy opening to pitch the weapon’s particulars and share his own personal experience.

    Well that sounds promising!

Chummer says that it includes “State of the Art ADL (German Handbook)” but it’s not offering me any Walther options other than the Palm Pistol.

Let’s see how well Mato talks shop with Brad. I’m always a bit uncertain whether to roll Intuition or Logic but in this case I’ll go with Intuition since it’s more about a hobbyist’s knowledge rather than a proper gunsmith’s expertise:

We’ll call that passing familiarity. I’ll put an IC post after this meeting I’m about to go into.

    More than fair.

Is the Walther P118 canon? I’m not familiar with it and can’t find any trace of it in the books. Brad is referring to it as “an auto”?

Mato thinks for a moment about compliment and blowing smoke up Hamington’s hoop about being ‘the right officer’ but ultimately decides against it. A man too busy to read his file is a man who wants to move things along at a brisk clip. Mato gives a crisp “Yes, sir. Understood!” then clicks his heels, spins, and departs. The casual racism is lamentable but – on the scale of things – tolerable. It’s certainly better than whatever AM has to deal with, given her Chastity Zippers.

Leaving, he considers the notion of handguns and rifles. His stomach dips a bit at the prospect, as his expertise is in automatic weapons. Well, too late to do anything about that now.

The thought crosses his mind: What if shadowrunners make a play for the Blue Admiral?! It’s certainly not outside the realm of possibility. Of course, given the setting it’s also equally likely that he could be investigating a murder mystery – Professor Plum in the study with the candlestick… – or helping Hamington dispose of an innocent bystander who got on the wrong side of his hounds.

Mato heads to the armory, hoping that there will be an armorer on staff who can provide him with house-approved hardware. He’s not expect the rifle until he’s out on patrol, but perhaps he can get a pistol for his holster before he starts scouting the grounds. Mostly for show, he thinks to himself, but the house guests will expect him to be armed for their protection…

Well, upon review Mato is not as good with guns as I thought.

In my head I thought he had the Firearms skill group, but it turns out that he doesn’t! He has Automatics, which is great for SMGs and assault rifles but means that he doesn’t know his way around a pistol or a hunting rifle. I attribute my confusion to having fired zero (0) shots during the course of this campaign. Actually, I’m struggling to remember any attacks of any sort.

Anyway, this should be good for some lolz. Tip of the cap to Jack if that was intentional.

    @jack_spade Asking about this part:

“The center above the kitchens has the armory and the Master of the Hunt’s offices.”

From the maps (or if I passed it on the way to Hamington’s office), does the armory look like a separate room/section or does it look like gun cabinets? I’m wondering if Mato needs to inquire about the armory to Hamington or if it looks like a staffed office/location that Mato would visit separately.

    Got it!

FYI, the Sioux stuff in my IC post is canon from the Shadows in Focus: Sioux Nation PDF. (Which, in my opinion, is excellent. I really wish they would get Kenneth Peters to do them for the rest of the Native American Nations.)

I took the company/battalion/division from my grandfather’s WWII service, although my grandfather was armor/tanks instead of infantry.

“Scouts, sir!” Mato answers reflexively, before remembering that he’s supposed to be Ute/PCC. He silently kicks himself.

It’s not like “Sioux Scouts” would have been a great answer anyway. The Scouts are a paramilitary youth organization that teaches basic military tactics, firearms handling, and survival skills. Their more benign public role is helping old ladies cross the street, selling cookies at fundraisers and planting trees. Most Sioux children, even Anglos, are enrolled in the organization when they start school. But to a military hardass, the Scouts are a fart in a stiff wind.

Military service in the Sioux Defense Force is compulsory at 18 years of age, but some citizens are so woefully out of shape, incompetent, or unmotivated that they “test out” of conscription during screening. Mato was all three prior to his cyberlimb enhancements and was screened out on his first day. Testing out got him a black mark almost as bad as holding a criminal SIN when it came to employment, which is part of the reason he left the Sioux Nation even after turning into a cyber singularity seeker. But, of course, this is the ‘real’ story and not the story of ‘Ignacio Severo’.

Mato backtracks, trying to cover things up with details from his dossier while not suggesting too much more expertise than he actually has. Hamington seems like the efficient type who wouldn’t want his life story anyway. “Pueblo Security Force, sir. Company A, 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry. SecForce specialties included scouting and recon.” After a short delay, he adds another “Sir” at the end for good measure.

@jack_spade Do we know what our files/SINs say? Are there specific details or are we supposed to make them up in decentralized fashion?

“Ignacio Severo!” Mato exclaims under his breath. “Do I look Hispanic??” It’s not clear if this is an honest question – given his possible parentage – or rhetorical. (He does, a little bit.)

“Remember, there is no more Ute Nation. It was absorbed by the PCC in 2067 following Crash 2.0. In terms of backgrounds, it makes sense to be Utes, in a way. It’s the poor part of PCC, and many of them felt dispossessed after the Pueblos took over. Maybe we came to Seattle to seek our fortunes, or just get away from the Puebs.”

He makes eye contact with AM, as what he says next is most relevant to her. “The only catch is that the Utes and the Sioux used to fight two hundred years ago. If anyone disparages the Sioux, we should be inclined to agree, not disagree, savvy?”

The trio review the maps together. Jawsey and Mato spot the same incongruities with the maps. Jawsey notes that quite a few of the walls are uncommonly broad, much more so than they would need to be for architectural purposes.

“Secret rooms, passages, at least one safe room – probably multiple ones,” Mato agrees. “I’ll keep my radar sensors going. Right, let’s get to it.”

@gilga It’s listed under your Wire Maid Work Outfit.

@all Damnit! I was going to buy Architecture with my knowledge karma – something about Mato studying the layout for the HQ – but then when it came time to spend the karma… I forgot and bought something else. Well, maybe this Chapter will inspire him to learn more.

Not a bad start. Maybe his radar sensors have taught him something over the course of time.

@gilga Thanks. The idea came to me following the post about the zippers. It also foreshadows the next Interlude which I have planned. AM doesn’t have any form of close combat skill, does she?

I figure AM has plenty of interesting options. Influence could deflect someone with less-than-noble intentions. Alternatively, Growth could work for some lolz, although I’m not sure how her clothes would react.

I also note that her Wire Maid Work Outfit includes shock frills on the cloak.

Alternatively, is there a stat block for Trouble? I want to make sure that future plans can incorporate his capabilities.

@jack_spade Fun outfits! I like mine but I’m also envious of everyone else’s too.

In other news, I’m losing patience with the color formatting on the site. I’m going to go with bold for speech for a bit, as that seems more reliable and less annoying.

Mato, needing only three hours of sleep, handles the early morning better than the others. He’s bright-eyed and busy-tailed, having gone through the shower and dressed before the others are even awake. He even gets into his role of waiting tables by cooking a breakfast of AlmostEgg, BacoSoy, and toast. (He initially reached for oatmeal but didn’t want the fiber, given the unknown access to bathroom facilities during their duties.) He also makes soykaf and tea.

He notices AM’s zippers and tries to coach her a bit during the drive north. It’s so dark that there’s not much to see at this hour anyway.

“If you can’t use your magic, joint manipulation is your friend,” he says while the car drives on autopilot. If someone tries to grab you, their hands will be vulnerable. Even a child is strong enough to bend an adult’s finger backward, or twist their knuckles sideways. It’s painful, effective, and doesn’t leave any physical evidence, like a knife in the belly.

“Failing that, go for the soft spots: eyes, nose, ears, jaw, throat, groin, knees… maybe the Achilles tendon. These are vulnerable on anybody, even trolls.” He pauses while considering that thought. “Well, maybe not on Invictus, but I’m not sure that he’s particularly interested in carnal affairs.”

It’s a grim topic for so early in the morning.

At the estate, he gives the man in the Chasseur a sharp, “Yessir!”, figuring that anyone with such meticulously-cut hair would appreciate the formality. Mato doesn’t salute though, partly because he doesn’t know if it’s appropriate but mostly because he doesn’t know how to do it properly. He then jumps on a Segway Terriers and pilots it down the small path that wound through the trees.
