Texas Hold'em 2078 [OOC] 2

Thanks for the kind words, all.

I have to confess that I usually don’t like songs in these settings – my eyes roll to the back of my head every time Tolkien busts out another one – so I felt like a bit of a hypocrite posting one, but the lyrics I was finding were too applicable to our current situation to not use them.

My current health is better, although there are still scheduling struggles. My job has gone from “a couple hours of downtime each day to work on your games” to “you’re not going to finish all your work by the end of the day”. Usually that means that my posting gets pushed to nighttime, but recently my toddler has evolved the art of stalling and drawing out bedtime to a new extreme. Normally he’s asleep by 9pm, but for the last couple weeks he’s been pushing things out to 9:30, 10, 10:30, even 11pm. That just doesn’t leave a lot of time for posting at the end of the day. Last night he went down at 9:30, so I had a bit more time to work on a post, but then he pulled off his diaper in the middle of the night and wet the bed, so there was a fun interlude of laundry and changing linens at midnight last night.

Right now I’m pinching some time from my lunch break. I’ll try to do that until either the work or the nighttime schedule returns to normal.

Not for much longer – we are nearing the end of the story. And I’ll need a bit of downtime before I can even attempt to GM anything again.

But yes, great work on the descriptions all around. Time to wrap this up…

Tecumseh: oh, I remember those ‘interesting’ toddler years, but I was fortunate enough not to combine those with the crazy work times or health issues. Putting them together …. ouch! (don’t worry, good on-line gaming years, in terms of kid bedtime, are coming for a while …. then eventually they start staying up later again. My kid is in university now so I’ve seen the full arc)

Anyway, the real point I wanted to make is that I love your very cool, longer, posts. But if some days all you have time for is “Ichante does the ritual” that is fine too. Everyone understands those times where it is hard just to read and to post a minimum.

Yeah, bedtime for toddlers. I wax nostalgic. Some very different approaches to handling it, but none of them is easy.

Mine are 8 and 10 now, so I like bedtime, since the books I read to them are much more interesting now.

But teenage years just around the corner – and some days it feels like they’ve already started.

My brother has two daughters, both in their 20s. My sister has three kids, all in their teens. I’m the baby, bringing up the baby, so I have a pretty good sense of what’s waiting for me via my nieces and nephews. I think I’m least excited about the sullen, moody teenager stage.

That said, I’ve honestly enjoyed every stage of development, from birth until 3.5 (his half birthday is this weekend), and at the same time I don’t miss any of them. People keep telling me, “Oh, it goes by so fast!” but that’s never been my experience. Everything seems to be moving along at the right pace. But I also wouldn’t mind if he wanted to go to sleep without a fight and then stay asleep all night.

    Back to the IC situation:

    1) Is there still a background count outside the thicket?
1a) If not, it seems like it would be fairly easy to levitate down.
    2) What sort of rolls do we need for manipulating the orb to reopen the portal? More Intuition+Arcana?

We had the BGC down to zero using the Orb, but then when Ichante fixed it so that it was no longer overheating, it started going back up for us, but we haven’t had a specific number from Jack yet.
Inside the Thicket the aspect is neutral – outside the Thicket it is aspected to Black Magic (probably not really relevant for us right now).

For manipulating the Orb, whatever the necessary roll, probably best odds if Al and Ichante work together.
Our pools are about the same, but I’ve still got Edge.
On the other hand, Teamwork from Ichante only adds one die for Al, but Al can add two dice for her (assuming it’s Arcana).

If you’re out of Edge, the best odds might be for Ichante to take the lead with Al assisting, but I could spend two Edge to give you a reroll or pre-Edge.

As for getting down, each Tier is only two meters – hang and drop shouldn’t be an issue for any of us, and Noir isn’t probably super heavy to just pass down…..

Nobody collected on my offer of edge from Preston, I think? So he could provide that to Ichante for the roll to open the portal. (sadly arcana isn’t something that just anyone can improvise).

In the way OOC realm, I started running a regular RPG for my son when he was 12, which both gave us a way to interact through all the teen years and let me seed a few subtle messages and ideas along the way. Prior to starting a regular rpg, I introduced the key concepts through a truly excellent rule set that you can find for free online called Night Time Animals Save the World. I can’t recommend it enough, it is a fantastic bridge between ‘lets pretend’ and more structured games. (When he was around 7 to 8)

Sounds cool – I will check that out.

If Ichante can levitate, she will. Seems like it would be gentler for Noir. Ichante probably won’t drop Noir accidentally on purpose.

As for Edge, I’m still sitting on 1 point because I decided I’d rather eat 2 drain and keep the Edge. Sounds like we have some coverage between Ichante and Al.

As for gaming, I’ve been debating on how to handle that. I’d like to game with my son, especially since I enjoy it, but I doubt that I’m going to start with Shadowrun. I suppose I could tone it down, but the violence and the dystopian themes might not make it the best place to start.

I was hoping that Ichante had levitate, but I decided to eat my curiosity and not go look. I’m sure Becky can jump down ledges without difficulty, and then Ichante could be passed down to her. Al and Preston can probably make it down on their own, if not as easily as Becky.

As for gaming, I didn’t start with Shadowrun, and totally agree it isn’t as well suited for most younger kids. When we started it was with herowars/heroquest, a nice light rule system set in the fantasy world of Glorantha (better known from the game RuneQuest). I think my son was 16 when he noticed my old SR books on a book shelf and asked if we could switch to it. I agreed, but have kept things less dystopian and a bit more heroic than is often done with SR (somewhat similar to the tone here)

Not that I want to jump the gun too much but I am beginning to plot plan my next GM foray as several of the ones I am running are drawing to a conclusion and it looks like THEM is too. Whilst I hope that Jack (or Beta who has also expressed an interest) will GM something (eventually) so that I can play too…

But I would really like to take this group forwards in to my next run (for various reasons that are potential spoilers). It will be set around June 2078 and probably take place in CalFree. It should be quite different to THEM so will be an interesting contrast. So, Beta, Tecumseh, Gilga… you up for that? I’m reasonably sure Adamu and Mercy will be and I hope Jack will take on a PC to replace Jazz.

I get crazy life schedules so the pace will be relatively easy going…

    Working title is Forbidding Aegis…

    In!

Also yes I’m still plotting a game, but I’m a) still a while away from being ready to run something here, b) I think I’d prefer for it to happen in Winter, so letting another game or two run first makes sense from that perspective, c) I’m looking to warm up with a segment of Forbidden Arcana, should we carry on with it, and d) no way do I want to follow right on the heels of Texas Hold’Em when I’m running my first full run!

I’m certainly up for another round after TH 🙂
And I’m glad you liked the frontend of this run, because the backend experienced quite a lot of turbulences 😀

You are one more INT+Arcana test away from going home and meeting your client 😉

    Intuition 6 + Arcana 2 + Psyche 1: 9d6t5 2 hits

    Spending last point of Edge:

    Edge rerolls 7: 7d6t5 1 hits

Geez, skin of my teeth if we need 3 hits. If we need more then I’ll need Al’s teamwork.

As for the next chapter, I’m tentatively interested if we’re thinking that the pace will be more relaxed. I really enjoyed the beginning of Texas Hold Em when I had ample free time to sit and write, but right now it’s looking like the next two months will be much more constrained.

I’d also be fine if we took a breather between runs. I’d be fine if took a couple weeks to gear up for the next round.

    Yeah, that’s enough.

As for the next round: Yeah, start of April is the earliest I can manage the next round (I’ve got to finish a few books first 🙂 )

I’m totally up for another run with this group, whoever GMs it.

I love Aria’s runs and Jack’s, and would love to see a run from Beta.

    And it’s a great group, I think.

    Count me in for sure.

No rush at all, will start planning for the end of March/beginning of April for IC kickoff… gives time to round up THEM and do some post run IC too…

Will probably move the IC/OoC to the SoP master thread so look for it there. Unless people want to change PCs I’ll plan on the basis of the current crop but Jack needs to let me know who he’d like to play and I know Beta is debating whether Preston will join you or someone else.

    Looking forward to it!

as a player I’m not assuming that we are quite at “…and fade cut to the bar where the party is having a party.” There are a bunch of details to deal with still.
