Isaint looked at the slightly unhinged appearing woman: “And who are you, besides a violent person?”

“They call me Isaint. Grendel, eh? Better then if I don’t make any “Yo Mama” jokes with you…”
    Isaint replied.

“You know, Grendel, the big scary monster, whose mother was an even bigger and badder monster…
Yeah, sorry, my jokes are as old as me…”
Isaint replied with a tired grin.

“sorry you lost me? Never mind, I’ll go get set up, could you keep updated with the plan so I know when we are going to move” she looked over the huddle forms of the survivors “we better find things for them to do or they’ll start to overthink things. That will cause us issues”

Alyce waits for Grendel to leave then leans over to Isaint. “They all seem so young to me. I can understand how people like Sian and Shrike saw me when I was younger. I got the reference, though, and it seems to be appropriate.”

After the drones are sent out and the injured seen to, Alyce goes back to where Isaint is and sits down near him and motions to the cave entrance. “I have spent most of the past two centuries living on Mars. I used some advanced terraforming technology to create part of this coast there. I used to live in Cornwall, not too far from here, actually. I loved that house. It sat right on the cliffs overlooking the sea. There was a cove below the manor where Al……” She pauses a few seconds then continues. “Sorry. I lost my train of thought there. Where Al could park the Snakehandler. You remember that plane, right? Anyway, there was a lift and some stairs that could take people and goods to and from the manor and the cove. Just beyond the manor was a great moor. I could walk for days along the hidden paths and byways, seeking out the plant and animal life there. It was good for meditating and just getting lost in the moment, you know. Anyway, I rebuilt that place on Mars after I was forced to leave Earth. it looks just as the original, down to every beam and stone. There are days that I have sat for hours on the deck overlooking the cove, waiting and hoping for the Snakehandler to arrive……………………only it never does.”

Alyce goes silent for a bit then shakes her head. “Alright, enough about me, I guess. What have you been doing since we last split up?”

She left the blind lady her trauma pack which lightened her load. She had picked her spot earlier a hollow between two Obvious clusters of rocks. Slowly and carefully she crawled into the position and set up. Rifle on main threat axis and then local folag. But the grass was broken, dry and brittle. Almost as if it was a faximilie. She did what she could and pulled out her rag wrapped binoculars and started her watch. Building up her range card and making sure she didn’t forget the drone feeds.

Isaint shrugged and shook his head sadly: “Not much as it seems. 208 years ago from your perspective, but only 5 months from mine, I came here on the recommendation of that old lizard and Silk. You know, my ork age had progressed considerably compared to you lot. I was getting slower, less precise, less endurant. There’s a point where training can’t compensate for the ravages of time. We had just gotten that thing done with the horror incursion in Glasgow. I felt like drek, like I’d let the team down. Silk told me, that a spell in fairy land would help me get back in shape, take off a few of those years. In exchange I’d lose some time on earth and could get back exactly when the drek hit the ventilation device. And it worked – somewhat.
Avalon is an amazing place. Pendragon wasn’t there, but still, I learned quite a lot and got back on my feet. But instead of five years or twenty, I’m back and everything’s gone. I missed my chance to help, to prevent them coming back.
I guess, all I’m carrying now is probably antiques and besides you there are probably very few people left that know me personally.”
He visibly composed himself and turned to Grendel
“Anything out there? I guess we have to find a way to communicate with your space station or whatever you came from.
So, is there anything we can use to contact them around here? Old radio station or a private airfield? Even a lighthouse would probably have the right equipment.”

“I’m not seeing anything from here, nor the drones. Gimme 5 minutes on the map. Someone keep watch.”
She pulled up the map soft and scanned through looking for the familiar forms of military bases. Barracks or airfields, she found one
“there’s an air base just under 40k south west of here it about 6 maybe 8 hours march. Was that what you were thinking of?”

“More or less. But I think you are optimistic: If we have to treat this as enemy territory our average speed can easily drop to 2 km/h or less. Nano plague or Horror crossing our paths could seriously cramp our style.
Speaking of which: What’s the status of rations and water? I don’t assume you came readily equipped for a forced march? All I’ve got is a simple survival kit.”
    Isaint replied.

Alyce grins. “I used to have an airstrip at the manor. I used it for the helicopter I kept there and for the smaller planes that would ferry me to and from London. The control tower and maintenance sheds were of the latest tech. Perhaps there is something still there? It is not that far from here, actually. Is it worth taking a look at?”

“if its less than 40ks then it got my vote” she looked around at the survivors “we all going or we splitting the group?” she folded her screen away and began to tidy up her position in anticipation of the order to move.

Alyce shakes her head. “My advice is to not split the group up. If we can get what we need at the manor, we may decide to keep moving and leaving some of us behind would be……….regrettable. My manor, or, rather, the location of where it used to be, is not too far from here. I do not think that any of the injured are so badly off as to need assistance walking there.”

She turns her head in Lily’s direction and smiles at the metal girl. “Hey, Lily. Isaint has brought up that we might find some good comms equipment at an abandoned airfield. As it happens, I have a house not too far from here, or, at least I had a house not too far from here. I kept a large helicopter there and the tower for my airstrip was well equipped. If the place is still standing, we might be able to use the equipment there to try to get a message out. If the Choir did not give you better instructions, would you give support to this plan of ours?”

Not Lily studied Alyce, choosing her words carefully “I do not represent the Choir, I was uniquely placed to bear witness to events on Earth and when everyone left I stayed behind as a Watcher. It has been hard but I have had help. If your airfield is still in one piece that might be a possibility, alternatively I am based out of an underground complex at Clearwater which has a communications rig that can punch through the jamming. It’s in the centre of Exmoor so it’s not as close but I know] it has what we need. It’s a trek and it will be difficult to avoid the roving beasts, perhaps if luck is with us we won’t need to go that far…”

The little elf piped up “best we go with go to what we know works.” looking over the wasteland “here’s no cover here unless it’s the lie of the land. We’ll need to pick our route and keep moving.” she asked the metal girl “do you know how far it is?”

Isaint shrugged: “Considering that Exmoor is about 100km from here, we might want to try at least the closer location first. Or try to find some kind of transport. Even a horse would be nice.”
