The Found Arcana – Chapter 6 [OOC]

    Once I got looking past Manipulation spells, I remembered some of my favorite one-hit-wonders from health: detox, healthy glow, and oxygenate (all can benefit from multiple successes in certain situations, but all are useful starting at one success). Health spells are cheap (in nuyen), but I need to save some karma and time towards increasing his magic attribute, so I think I’ll just take one for now ( I was briefly tempted to go for all of them).

    – detox: can cut off Psyche when Jawsey needs to get to a wider focus (for example: not getting so focused on dancing and how to safely check
    for wards that he forgets about not drawing the attention of the dragon), as well as defense against disabling gas attacks (and in the coming scenario, potentially getting drugged — but he wouldn’t know that when choosing spells)

    – healthy glow: boost social limits for Bobby and Mato, increase first aid rolls if needed, and more usefully on the fluff side make SIS look its best no matter how rough the night has been.

    – oxygenate: it is surprising how often the ability to not need to breath can come in handy, I could imagine cases for SIS where hanging out underwater or in a sealed container could be useful when trying to figure out a case (or less comonly, helpful against smothering attacks)

    <div>He’d have likely consulted the team, so opinions welcome on which one of the three.
    </div><div>

    In the meantime, let’s see how long it takes to learn Clairaudience, so how much left for other spells and to start training his magic attribute up. Each spell takes 12 days/ (hits on spellcasting+intuition)

    </div>

    – learn clairaudience learn clairaudience: 9d6t5 5 rounds up to 3 days

    @beta Looks like part of your IC post might have been munched by the site’s formatting.

    @jack_spade Cunningham said that His Lordship “he intends to propose to his longtime fiance”. Now “longtime fiance” suggests that a proposal has already been made, and some time ago. Before Mato jumps on the contradiction ICly, I wanted to ask if it was just a GM slip.

    That was a slip on my part. I couldn’t remember the right word for it.

    Basically, he knows her for a long time and now finally wants to propose.

    I thought as much. I’m not sure what a fancy Brit would call that.

    I just recalled the SIN issue AM has (R2 SIN). I’d imagine she would not have forgotten about it. Can she even participate in such a run with these credentials?

    I added the camera and the 5 doses of Psyche bought with the pooled coins to our stash (making a new section for ‘tradeables’ for the latter). The 4 doses of Psyche that Jawsey had bought earlier he quietly kept for himself — addict and all.

    @gilga

    Don’t worry, Cunningham can swing this in any case, since he’ll have to bring you in under fake names anyway.

    @beta I still think one of your IC posts is missing some speech, because it goes:

    ““

    Jawsey stares into space for a moment, then suggests ““

    Karma spending looks accurate.

    Is Jawsey already tracking against Magic 4? Because that would cost 20 karma and accomplish the same thing as boosting Spellcasting, Summoning, and Ritual Magic (which cost 19 karma between them). Increasing Magic would take 4 weeks, but we had that between the end of Chapter 5 and the beginning of Chapter 6. (Technically the four weeks would be done tomorrow, December 23rd, but close enough I should say.)

    I noted you took Cooking as a knowledge skill. I suppose one thing we could discuss is Active vs. Knowledge skills. For example, “Cooking” is a specialization of the Artisan active skill, which implies that Jawsey’s knowledge is more theoretical than practical. But via Arcana we already have precedent for moving active skills to knowledge skills, which I think is reasonable. I’m open to moving “other skill you’re never going to use in the course of a normal job” over to knowledge skills. Mato, for example, is also interested in cooking, as well as drum music (performing, not just listening). I took Artisan and Performance because they’re cheap, but we can discuss if we want to approach flavor skills differently.

    Mato still has 7 knowledge karma for Professional purposes, so he’s going to:

    – Advance his Street Doc to Connection 4

    – Buy Security Design at rating 2

    @Tecumseh thank you, I think finally corrected properly. Basically a paragraph where he says that he and Amy should go pay their debt interest early, after going to the tailor. As we may not be able to head out to do that on schedule otherwise. Also that Amy should take however much of the advance needed to make the payment.

    As for interests, I always figured that if Profession skills can include things like Architecture, Business, Engineering, Military, or Police Procedures (examples from the book) that it would also cover things like barrista, janitor, chef, etc. They all still need appropriate active skills to be any good at it, but the profession makes you a military officer and not just someone with weapons skills and an interest in military etiquette. And then I further extrapolate that there could be “Interest” skills that are similar, for dabblers rather than people who do it professionally. (Interest: architecture, UCAS military, coffee culture, etc). You know a lot about it, but that doesn’t actually mean you are good at doing it. So “interest knowledge skill: cooking” means he’s watched a lot of celebrity chef trids, knows when to use a sous vide machine or what it means to zest a lemon. Doesn’t mean that he is skilled at assembling good meals under pressure.

    Yes, he’ll pick up the Artisan skill eventually, and maybe even the cooking specialization. I just hadn’t gotten around to that part yet, and figured it could be worth a few laughs in the meantime.

    And finally, he’s put in the first 8 days (of 28) toward raising his magic. That is coming after this run. And yah, I could have done it in the other order, but I’d started planning all of that before knowing when this next run would happen, so I started with the quicker parts, and figured that Jawsey wouldn’t have known either so might also have prioritized quicker studies.

    @Jack rules question.

    So if I read Florence’s suggestion we do the smart wig/trodes the DNI allows AM to receive information without glasses? I always assumed that she can text mentally but needs to look at the deck to read/see things but perhaps my interpretation is wrong.

    I realized I’d forgotten to pay Jawsey’s hotel bill. Updating his sheet for that.

    Trodes can completely take over the need for displays – it projects AR objects, including sound and images directly into your field of vision/ear.

    Jack’s right. I thought you still needed an image link, but the call-out box on p. 222 clearly says, “DNI is also useful for AR in that you don’t need any additional gear like earbuds or an image link to see or hear augmented reality objects.”

    it is strange that SR people use these devices, when they have DNIs cheaper and more accessible, but the economy of that game was never really that well designed.

    I have often fantasized about winning the lottery and purchasing the publishing rights to Shadowrun. I think one of my first actions would be to hire an economist (or, you know, find an intern) to help bring some logic to the game’s economies.

    @Tecumseh now I’m hoping you win the lottery!

    Eta: managed to lose a mostly complete Ic post (too distracted by the return of playoff hockey here. The first game ran 2.5 times the expected duration due to a tie that they just couldn’t seem to break).

    I’ll put up something quickly ic

    Are you planning to do anything before the clothes arrive and you are supposed to present yourselves at the mansion?

    AM would probably do an extensive matrix search about his Lordship, and key figures around him. About the guests (if we get a list), and their interests. Mostly some pointers for conversation starters, and to understand something of the social situation.

    If she find it, she’ll be happy to put her hands on a map or pictures of the mansion.

    Cunningham said, “You should find a file with all necessary information on your account in short order.”

    Mato’s intention will be to study that. I don’t know what sort of information it would include. Depending on the results of that and AM’s Matrix Searching, we may wish to reach out to Janet Dime and Lysander for supporting information.
