I am bouncing ideas around that might help with the funding and operating costs. Thanks to input from some of the others here, I have some ideas I would like to float to see if they are something that you would allow me to try.
1: Tonya will approach EVO with the idea of helping her construct a new facility in Chinatown that is dedicated to first rate care, but will also be a research facility specializing in cybernetics. The hospital could act as a test bed for any cyberware developed or co-developed by EVO and the hospital’s research department. Tanya would approach her very good friend, Dr. Alyce Krait for assistance in approaching EVO, since Alyce has close ties to the AAA corporation.
2: Tanya would explore a lead she has in China that would involve using the hospital to develop and put into mainstream use some of the ancient remedies from there. This effort would start out in small street clinics that would act as satellites for the hospital and spread the ancient techniques to another area. She believes that some powerful and wealthy families in China are interested in this sort of program.
3: Tanya knows lots of people in the Seattle area that have little to do with the mountains of nuyen they have. There are a number of rich socialites she can tap for support of a project like this and she is skilled in appealing for funds from such people.
4: Tanya, as Song Ai, has close connections to the Red Dragon Triad of Hong Kong. She would appeal to them for some funding to help get this started.
Tanya is skilled, not naive. She understands that there will likely be strings attached to any of these endeavors. She also understands that getting the 88s out of the trafficking and drug lines will just leave a vacuum for other organizations to fill, but that is just the way things are. She will try to show that there are other, better ways to make money than through those methods and perhaps others will follow her lead. Ambitious and perhaps simply tilting at windmills, yes, but it is a cause she can get behind.

@Mercy EVO, with its Vory connections might be a bit red rag to a bull? Wuxing might be a better choice and fit with the ancient remedies bit??

Well, I’ve been a real naysayer on the “reform the Triads/build a hospital” project.
Pointing out – in Al’s super-diplomatic and considerate way – all the problems others have mentioned here.A wonder Mercy/Tanya keeps such a negative voice around!
On the other side, though, it is a simple fact that hospitals do get built.
Thousands.
All over the world.
And they all start with someone having the idea….And, no doubt, with that someone gathering a coalition of backers….

I guess my primary question is “why would a modern hospital and research facility give the Triads a reason to stop human trafficking and drug smuggling/distribution?” It seems to me that the Triads would continue to be the Triads.
The flip side would be “if anybody can do this, Tanya can”. Between her natural charisma, her social skills, her privileged family name, her friends in high places (especially her uncle), and her “I know a guy” advantages among the social elite, it seems that she would be the perfect candidate to spearhead a fundraising campaign. Between etiquette, negotiation, and con, it seems like she could charm, bargain, and seduce her way into making things happen.

There’s also no rush! Speaking as an architect, it would probably take 2 years to get a hospital designed and another 2 at least to build… so no way the foundations are even being poured by the time FA is coming up ? (ok I know SR has faster construction techniques but you get the point ??)

Thanks for all the nice words as well as the touches of realism. Tanya may indeed have a tiger by the tail and it may bight her face off, however, she will not stop until it is patently obvious to her that this will fail. I will try to make a few points to clarify things.
First, those of you who have been following the Triads and Tribulations thread, Tanya, in the guise of Song Ai, has wormed her way into the confidence of the senior lieutenant of the 88s Triad, Fu Shing. Due to some machinations, the current head of the Triad is on the run and in hiding and almost all of his support has been killed or neutralized. Certainly, the man does still have a small following and has shown that he still has the resources to throw outside mercenaries at Song Ai and Fu Shing and the large casino that is Fu Shing’s primary money earner. The current plan is to have Fu Shing declared the new head of the 88s at a meeting to be help over the weekend. Fu Shing has already agreed in principal to the three main reforms Song Ai is pushing; forced prostitution, human trafficking, and the manufacture/distribution of illegal drugs. Tanya knows that this will be unpopular and that the reforms will need to be staged in, but her plan is to show that the Triad can make lots of money from an alternate, legal source and that they can move into the mainstream of near legitimacy.
Second, Tanya is very aware that the actual building of the hospital is still several years away. There are all sorts of hurdles to jump over, such as zoning requirements, building permits, hiring staff, finding equipment, and getting a good architectural design in place. She wants to get a start on the funding now by creating a non-profit foundation to collect and hold any nuyen raised in support of the project.
Third, like Adamu said, projects like these start with someone having an idea, so why can’t it be her idea? She has contacts among the social elite of the area and skills in negotiation, fundraising, etiquette. I like the Wuxing idea and she will do what she can to initiate some contacts there.
Besides, a girl can have a dream, right?

@Electric_Muppet: I’m going to be singularly useless in the ‘help’ department and say that either will bring something to the team that would be useful 😀 …and I like the sound of both!
Becky is a dryad…one more might either push the realms of believability or equally go unnoticed, so can’t make a decision based on that…
There isn’t a strong matrix presence in the group but I’m happy for that to be an NPC so that doesn’t help much either 😛

@All: Although I’m in no rush I’ve amended the IC placeholder with an initial (and deliberately vague post) so if anyone wants to put up an IC opening post describing where they are around June 2078 then please do so! Any meet etc probably won’t happen until April as originally promised so if you’re not ready to post IC yet don’t worry!

@electric_muppet Totally agree with Aria on helping you, although I think that I would lean towards the Pale Horse character a bit.
Wow, there is a quite good section on Wuxing on Wikipedia. The author(s) seem to have taken information from many of the canon source books and collated it in one place. If that is an OK source, I can make use of the information there. It would seem that this is the correct corporation for Tanya to approach. The AAA is a big player in the Pacific Rim, but is just starting to make inroads on the Pacific coast of North America and has little influence in Seattle at all, so far. They have good relations with the Red Dragon Association Triad, as does Tanya in the guise of Song Ai. The corp has a medical branch that might be interested in expanding into Seattle and has fingers in magical and cybernetic research, both of which could work in this case. Also, they are very much into the traditions of ancient China, something that Song Ai can play on as well.
There are several references to a highly placed British family, the Harper-Smythes. This family was instrumental in providing financial and political support to the emerging corporation and this influence seems to have continued. Although not directly stated, it seems likely that this family is still helping Wuxing expansion into Europe, where it is challenging SK on several fronts. Tanya, being British nobility herself, might be able to work some sort of angle with the Harper-Smythes to get an introduction.
Just spitballing some ideas, here.

Now you just need to establish that there is an appropriate ley line at a possible hospital site, and you will have ticked all of the Wuxing boxes 🙂

LOL I was just looking at a map of ley lines in Seattle. It is hard to read, so I will look for another source, but it does seem as if they do exist. It could certainly be good news if one runs through Chinatown.

I just looked at another map that was commissioned by Seattle and there are a number of ley lines in the area. Looking at the map, it should be easy to say one or more are located in the Chinatown of SR Seattle.

We don’t have any Matrix support. I don’t know if that sounds exciting to you or intimidating. I would agree with Aria that multiple dryads seems like a stretch. Did being a dryad just sound fun or does it have a specific hook for the rest of the character?Ichante and Pale Horse already know each other, so that’s an advantage. Of course, we’re have lots of Awakened at the moment. Tanya and Danzig are our only mundanes, I believe, and that’s only if Beta chooses to go with Danzig instead of someone else. That said, none of the Awakened (or mundanes for that matter) are really pistoleros, so you’d still be filling a missing niche.

I’m going with pale horse but a rewrite. Batshit revoles around her being a Dryad. It’s how she survived running from the horizon snatch teams.

I pulled a ley line map off the internet. It was a bit confusing, but the lines were all over the city, so I was assuming that at least one was in the right place.

We have a lot of magic …. but my impression is that Becky and Al are more augmented by their magic than dependent upon it. Which means that a BCG or mana barrier maze won’t shut them down too severely I think? So I think the heaviness of magic is more of an issue staking a distinct identity than of ‘a BCG entirely cripples us’?

Ichante is a mage, right? From what I remember of the hold ’em thread, she can be pretty bad ass.
