Forty kept her face a scowling mask in the face of the other elf’s banter, desperately trying to hide her confusion. Werewolves came from eggs? Was the other woman mocking her? If so, she’d show her what’s what, one way or another! But there was also a mention of a gig in that jumble of words. That was a good thing.

Shoving her hand into a pocket of her cargo pants she grabbed the enpowered scrap of paper and softly ordered herself “Think smart Forty!”

    Spoiler:
force 3, potency 3=6 dice. log prep: 6d6t5 3 Taking her logic up to 4 for three minutes.

Replaying the conversation it all made more sense now, and it had been a joke, not really an insult. The ARO from the dog maybe made less sense, but she could wait on that. Time was flying past.

To this ‘Becky’ woman she finally replied “Werewolves are frosty, but you go first and show me how its done.” Then to the dog “Hey, we should talk later, if you want. I’ll do a thing.”

Then she gave her attention to the orc, doing her best to show she wasn’t intimidated, but trying not to make too much of a power play. “Hey, we’re here. You good to tell us what’s what and how much something-something it’s worth to you — in like, the next two minutes? Or should I go use the facilities, get a drink, and give you like fifteen minutes to finish trolling through this place?”

Frag she wished that both preparations had taken, so she’d have more smart time before she had to go find something to write on, and spend some time putting new preparations together. Although it would be good to do a mind link one so she could talk to the dog more easily, and maybe a willpower one for the drunk man to help him to focus.

Looking around the room, Forty couldn’t spot Roxxie. Where was the woman? Weren’t waitresses supposed to be working the room all of the time? If she didn’t show up soon, Forty was going to miss out on any possible work.

What she did see as she looked around was a gathering around the dog. The fancy woman was now there, along with an equally fancy looking orc. And they were looking at her. Forty frowned and looked away, trying not to start anything. Finally she saw Roxxie, and the human met her eyes — and then glanced toward the gathering around the dog.

Forty looked back, and the orc was looking at her again. “Fine, if that is how its going to be.” She was standing by the time she finished muttering the words.

In the space of the few long strides that it took to approach the little gathering she gathered the mantle of Thunderbird around her, gathering speed, authority, and access to other skills. Reaching the group she glared at the meta-humans, then crouched down to greet the dog, offering it a hand to smell. Standing back up she gave another glare to the rest of the group, in case they’d forgotten the first one already. “The only one of you lot who looks polite is the dog. What the problem with the rest of you fraggers? I’m here looking for ‘work’ and don’t have a lot of time to sort you out. Why are you looking at me, hunh?”

    Section 1: character notes:
In my final building I re-jigged priorities to magic A, which gave alchemy at five …. at which point I decided to go all the way and raise it to six, then buy the magic quality ‘practiced alchemist’ which doubles preparation duration (and once initiated gets preparations to gain extra dice when used). Paid for by giving up another spell slot (along with two spells given up for the chosen follower (might not have that name right) one mentioned earlier).

I will be sitting down with Run Faster later today or tomorrow to add some minor gear items (pens, bags, etc)

Section 2: OOC for the IC post about Forty making a couple of logic preparations.
Forty gets working on two force 3 enhance logic preparations.
    First:
    logic prep 1 (limit 3): 12d6t5 2
    prep 1 resist: 3d6t5 2
    prep 1 drain resist (vs 2): 12d6t5 2

    Second:
    logic prep 2 (limit 3): 12d6t5 5 limits to 3
    prep 2 resist: 3d6t5 0
    prep 2 drain resist (vs 2): 12d6t5 4

I’ll edit the IC in a bit, to reflect that the first one didn’t take. 2nd one has potency 3, and is good is for 12 hours before dropping (3x2hours, x2 for practiced alchemist), goes off at six dice.

After winning her place in the corner, Forty realized that in her rush to finally get here she’d come unprepared. With a shrug she set about correcting that.

She tore an abandoned empty plastic glass into strips, but then discovered that the stub of pencil she had with her wouldn’t write on the plastic. She checked her pockets again, only to confirm that she hadn’t remembered to bring a marker either. She did, however, find a folded up piece of paper.

Flattening it out on a dry spot on the shelf running along the wall, she read her own scrawl ‘remem preps for Basil’s, and knife+marker+chips’. She stared at it for a moment, then remembered writing that reminder hours earlier when she’d been under a logic preparation.

She snorted then muttered “Nice try Forty.”. Then she flipped the paper over¦ tore it and half and, with tongue between her teeth in concentration, carefully drew a few familiar kanji characters on first one strip and then the other. She focused on inviting the kami to empower the prayers. She didn’t ask for great power, as she’d found that getting too clever was rather unsettling, and besides which it took too long.

The first preparation didn’t take. She scowled at the paper, quietly muttered a prayer to the kami, and managed to achieve a more humble state of mind briefly. In another few minutes she sat back, satisfied that this time she’d put together a solid preparation. She’d rather have had two ready, but she was out of paper for the moment.

That was when she finally noticed that there was a large dog in the bar, apparently there with a disheveled man she didn’t recognize. She almost pulled one of the enhance logic preparations out to puzzle that through, but decided it was better to save them for now.

Character sheet and bio are now complete on OP. Could use some formatting work in parts of the character sheet, and I’ll keep putting up IC posts on Dumpshock with hopefully more interesting looks at her history, but all the basic info should be there.

ETA: actually that isn’t quite right, right after posting I realized I forgot to put the contacts in. They’ll go up later today.

Thanks Obi — I’d never hit upon that SR wiki, it looks like a fantastic resource! I have most of the books, but not quite all so it is great to finally have a source for those last few bits 🙂

Forty, Early Evening, Saturday August 1st, 2071; Basil’s Faulty Bar

Forty almost wanted someone to hassle her. Her sister had taken forever to shut the frag up about some new BTL she wanted. Never mind that Forty had taken a bunch of the money she’d made recently and equipped the shrine with candles and prayer slips and all that crap, the addiction had been way stronger than any gratitude tonight. In the end Forty had prepared a couple of will prayers for her to use, and by some miracle she’d been able to get to sleep with their help.

If she wasn’t already late getting to Basil’s to look for work she might have poked into an alley or abandoned lot, just to see if she could have found some trouble to take her frustrations out on. But straight to the bar it was. She needed to land another job, and it wasn’t easy after she’d pissed off that Shiawase Johnson. How had she been supposed to know that even if he’d dressed ‘street’ he expected to be talked to like Corp? Fragging ass, and now people seemed to think she was some sort of loose cannon or something. She should have tracked him down and showed him what REAL disrespect felt like.

Arriving at Basil’s didn’t help her mood any. There was some fancy looking elf, and everyone was busy either looking at her or not looking at her.
Forty felt an immediate urge to tear her down a bit, but the fancy piece was probably better at word games, and the bar didn’t allow anything more substantial than that. Looking around she found the waitress she’d been working on –Roxie — but the short human woman just gave Forty an eye-roll. Forty didn’t know what her problem was — probably judging her for showing up late or something stupid drek like that. Still, Roxie knew Forty would give her a decent tip, even better for news on anyone recruiting, so she’d come by eventually.

Until then, Forty looked around, found a corner only occupied by a couple of boys who probably thought they were deckers. She sauntered over, stood way too close to them, and waited for them to start shifting uncomfortably. When they did she looked at the pudgy one and gave a predatory smile. Shortly after she had the corner to herself, the way she liked it.

Ack, just found the errata to SG that removes Commanding Voice and inserts Authoritative Tone. Now the character making excel sheet makes sense…. although there is a new Commanding Voice in Stolen Souls, apparently. Does anyone have that book, could tell me if there is more detail to it than “5 word command Cha+Leadership vs. will + int”

ETA: took Commanding Voice just based on the summary. General revision done to move away from melee abilities. Now still need to take the spreadsheet and translate it to OP. Will try to do that tomorrow finally. But going to get a real quick IC up (will leave those background posts on Dumpshock (and have some more to write there as well). I think they’d make the sequencing here odd.

I think that these have to be counted in the 25point cap on qualities at creation. (And they don’t cost double later on, so better to take the regular ones first if you hitting up against the max. But for a mysad there is not so many karma points available for qualities, so this gets more interesting.

Aria, want to make a quick check on something. FA allows starting spells to be used to buy the magical qualities from FA (5 karma worth per spell converted this way). Just wanted to check that you are good with that.

(what I’m planning on going for is 99% enabler of backstory and suchlike — the quality where Thunderbird really like her, and at the season changes may help her learn something — karma cost still applies I’m sure. I’d never quite mapped out how she learned her smidgen of alchemy, and this would cover it. But it is also precedent for others, and there are some pretty powerful qualities in there).

Posted some deep backstory on Forty, on the Dumpshock IC thread (what went down over forty years ago, that led to her time in prison). Should I eventually bring that over here too, or only the more ‘in the present’ material?

OK then, Tacoma, Basil’s Faulty Bar

“Tacoma doesn’t have many dedicated runner hangouts, but Basil’s was exactly that for the time that former shadowrunner Abe Heep owned the place.”

But that is about 2077 or so, so in 2071 it should still be under Abe.

ETA looks to be 2-3km from the waterfront. Hopefully he can survive that far inland!

ETA2: 1st edition Seattle book has the same bar, and mentions the owner (Abe) as being a former intelligence agent, willing to sometimes share info with runners. Amazing he survived for over twenty years! But by 2071 his intel should be ancient, but seems runners kept coming.

Aria, using your character generator spreadsheet, under lifestyles there doesn’t seem to be the options from the CRB, just the ones from Run Faster. OK if I hack in what I wanted to use (specialized work area), or is this omission deliberate?

Do you have a part of the sprawl in mind? I have only the first and the most recent Seattle books, but glad to research what I can (or write something up)

Downtown, Penumbra Station (former club Penumbra) is rumoured to be owned by former runners, and might attract wannabes.

In Redmond, back in the fifties Yoshiro’s was noted as attracting a lotof runners — basic cheap soy food and beer in Woodinville, near Snohomish. meanwhile not quite in Touristville there was The Mad Woman. “…used to be a major nightclub before the crash of ’29. Now dancing and singing are out, while heavy drinking is in, though the owners sometimes turn on the radio so people can toss back shots in time with the music. The place is usually crowded with unemployed shadowrunners drowning their sorrows.”. Which sounds like a place that might not change much over twenty years.

I didn’t find anything runner related for Puyallup in either book.

If you are looking for somewhere else, I can go looking

Well, she pissed off the Johnson in that game, but in the re-casting of the character I got rid of the “Prejudiced: Humans” negative quality. That was just a bit too common of a bias. Impassive works nicely in the same general space without being as huge of a mechanical impact. (in this case ‘impassive’ is more like ‘in your face’, but coming from the same source (seen too much of the bad side of things) and having the same effect (limits quality of social interactions).

    Yay, dumpshock is back up!

I have a second piece to write, once both are done I could always post them here (what is up so far is ‘why is she looking for work in the shadows’ but I have planned a ‘ … and that is not all working out so well’ piece, to highlight the desperation).

And a question I asked on Dumpshock, but I’ll put here too in case it goes back down: I’m assuming it is by-the-book character creation, including only 25 points of negative qualities? I pruned down my original list, but they still add up to 29 — I’m keeping them either way, just want to confirm whether the last points are gone. (karma comes fast in this game, so I’m not too worried — but waste not!)

The build in JM’s game did have logic bought up to 2, but I really felt that how I was playing her didn’t represent logic being that high …. 😮 (but I’ll buy it up fairly quickly in game, because 1 really is ridiculous for a runner. (to put it another way, it isn’t so much that she can’t think as that she doesn’t take the time or make the effort to think logically. She is basically the stereotypical dumb thug, other than race, gender, and choice of weapons).

I posted an introductory piece of fiction in the general IC thread on Dumpshock, and will have biography and character sheet up on OP in next couple of days.

ETA: and now it seems that Dumpshock is down again … if it stays down for long will re-post somewhere on here. Also to note that the character link above has been edited (a couple of spell and adept power changes, negative qualities re-arranged, fake ID improved all the way to level 2, and knowledge skills added. Still need to note concentrations on the skill summary on the first page, and do most of the contacts.

Apparently I could not handle names last night. steyr TMP, not stey Aug, and thunderbolt, not firebird.

Also realized after posting that analyze device was not a good choice because of object resistance, so will change up at least that preparation ; currently thinking either deflection or accuracy.

And finally pretty sure I’ll change out the falling related adept powers for (if I don’t have a name screwed up again) trackless walk. Should help with the stealth side of things, although I do like the ability to jump out third floor windows, so will see.

EtTA: and now I notice that I can edit posts, doh. Will fix the names in the original post.

Mostly complete character calculator sheet can be seen here: (knowledge skills and contacts still to be done)
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kti9l8OsEEgvwlaRFym58wBy8o_Dc5e_DBOkuobvjK8/edit?usp=sharing

    Feedback most definitely appreciated!

Character basics: elf Mysad, was a surge baby, at age 18 was convicted of blowing up an occupied police car with a Molotov cocktail (actually it was her first big air spirit summoning, lightning ignited the moonshine bottles she hurled at the car), for which she served forty years in prison. Magic screening wasn’t so good around 2030 and she hadn’t recognized her talents, and mostly hid them as they slowly developed. She just got out of prison a few months ago, and is living with her chip head sister (human, now somewhat elderly).

Feedback welcome. Intent is to be able to provide
    – spirits (combat, miscellaneous tasks)
    – all the attitude (intimidation at 16-17 dice)
    – teamwork assist on social tests, growing to more competence with time (and a non-disastrous 9-10 dice on her own)
    – basic anti-spirit defense (her own spirits, killing hands+spirit claw+unarmed combat)
    – firefight support (with her Stey-Aug rolls 14 dice, can do a turn of suppression fire)
    – a few low level alchemy tricks (boost logic, boost willpower, heal, analyze device, mind net)
    – some slightly random falling related adept powers that I might swap out for something else.

    Known weaknesses:
    – level 1 fake ID
    – lowish stealth, and generally a lack of subtlety
    – Chances of creating trouble (criminal SIN, Firebird mentor spirit (doesn’t let insults go easily), “Did you just call me dumb” negative quality)
    – Logic 1. That is deliberate. It is how she ended up in jail, and why she’ll go back there if she doesn’t learn to think more (for short bursts of better thinking she can prepare increase logic preparations). High priority to increase
    – Edge 1. Also deliberate, luck has not gone her way so far. Maybe she’ll improve her karma and buy this up too.
    – No astral perception (yet, anyway, but that is a longer term project)

The idea was to rely on spirits for power, and not have the full flexibility of spirits+spells+adept powers. (a bit of alchemy is still useful, but not as flexible as regular spells). Plus it kind of works with her background.
