I’m in, and will re-spin Forty — some of you might recall her from Jayde Moon’s sadly deceased multi-group game.

One question: she was a mysad with alchemy and without spell-casting (incompetent with the sorcery group). Forbidden Arcana decided that mysads don’t get access to the enchanting group anymore. On ShadowGrid one of the freelancers suggested ‘you can always see if your GM will let you swap out another skill group for enchanting. So I guess what I’m asking is if that swap is OK with you? (and I’ll have to find a different negative quality to take).

Absolutely in on the lower level game — my only question on that one is which character to play 🙂

And I make take a long step back on character creation for SoP, worry less about being mechanically good, and see if I can get a character to talk to me. Might come up with someone that fits in around the edges.

Hi folks, sadly I’m throwing in the towel. Aria, sorry to have reserved a spot, only to flake out just as things are starting. Everyone else, sorry to miss the cool stories I’m sure you are all going to make.

Life distractions kept me from really thinking about a character in May, and now I just can’t seem to make a character that I’m interested in playing and which has the capacity to play in these leagues…. and I just don’t have the available time to grind it out and I’m already behind the IC, and I just don’t see that side of things getting better anytime soon. So between lack of inspiration and lack of time to commit to the game, it is best to step aside.

I’d been looking forward to this very different game, but I should have realized that with my preference for punks and barrens rats rats and the like, that finding a character that engaged me was going to be a real challenge, and I needed to have gotten more invested in that earlier. I’m sorry I’ll be missing the game, and sorry again for dropping at the last minute.

    Have fun out there!

I’ve downloaded it , but so far haven’t had time to read more than the table of contents … but that was enough to tell me that I need to read more before building ‘Jack’.

I’m a ‘bit’ behind the rest of you it seems. But this might help you get to know Jack a bit better.

At the end of the duo’s cover of “Royal Station 4/16” there was a decent amount of applause, for a place like this on a rainy Tuesday night. The guitarist plucked a couple of notes
used his slide to warp their sound around, and then he spoke.

“Playing saxophone is mighty thirsty work, so Leslie there needs a beer break. So you’ll have to put up with just me for a few minutes.” He struck a string of downward sliding notes, stretching the last one out before moving to some gentle picking, not doing anything too fancy with the slide. After a few bars he said “Sometimes people ask me ‘Jack, how come you play the slide guitar, instead of playing normal-like?’ Maybe you were wondering the same, so I’m gonna tell you my little story.

“Quite some time ago I thought I was immortal and far too good at life to come to harm. Maybe you’ve had a similar time in your life, I don’t know.” He paused to allow for a few chuckles and a shout from the bartender “I was so young and stupid I got married!” Jack gave him a nod and replied “Well I didn’t do anything quite so dire as that, but I did underestimate the efficacy of modern munitions. In other words I got my fool hand half shot off.”

After a couple of sombre bars he continued “Now, at that time and place we did not have recourse to all the best medicine and cyberware. I was pretty convinced that I could heal it up on my own, but as I was also telling them that I’d suffered worse while fighting for Julius Caesar they chose to ignore my opinion. Funny that. Anyway, the best excuse for a doctor that we had on hand decided that the only choice was to amputate just above the wrist and cauterize the stump. A little barbaric but a tried and true solution that kept me from bleeding out or getting infected.”

“As it happens, I did not have the resources at that time to re-grow my hand or get it replaced with cyberware, so I had to make do with a hook. You can imagine that this was not a pleasant experience, used as I was to having two hands and all. There is a possibility that I was somewhat depressed, but truth to tell I don’t remember quite a bit of that period.” After a few notes he added “Turns out it only takes one hand to get drunk.” That was greeted with laughter and several patrons of the bar lifted their glasses or bottles in salute before taking a deep drink.

He transitioned into something more lively, almost a jig, before he wrapped up his story “One day I saw someone play a lap steel guitar, and I realized that I could strap a steel to my forearm and play like that. Gave me something to do, a way to earn a few more beers, you know? Eventually I got good enough to play with some kind of big names, gigs that paid enough to eventually get a hand re-grown. But by then I was just plain used to playing with a slide, and I didn’t see as how I wanted to grow calluses on my nice new fingers, so I just stuck with what I knew.”

A patron yelled out “What a pile of drek! You just want us to feel sympathetic.”

Jack smiled and replied “I don’t really need your sympathy sir, although I won’t mind if you give it. I admit that I may have omitted some details and dates, but every word of my story is true.”

By that time Leslie was returning to the stage, and Jack launched into the opening of “The Joker.”

What I had mapped out was that in an early encounter with firearms he had a limb largely blown off. Even with magic so low he probably could have healed it eventually, but the surgeons of the day did the one thing they could do, and amputated. So he’d gone a few centuries short-handed, so to speak. When ‘ware finally came around he jumped at the opportunity to get a replacement limb, and to add titanium lining to his bones so that such damage could not easily happen again. (I could potentially go to a partial limb replacement or aluminum bone lining, and get the cost down to 1 essence lost).

Yes, in certain periods of the past he’d be wearing a hook (or peg leg? probably a hook though). I figure I could deal with that.

Just to check with others, how big are your dice pools in your main areas? I’m guessing truly core areas at 20+ dice and major supports at 15+? ( I’ve not started doing math yet to figure out how hard hitting those numbers is, but I’m guessing for magic something like multiple initiations, buy magic to 8, buy key skills to 8 or 9, have a power focus rating 4 or something, throw spells at 20+ dice before considering spirit support). But maybe people are focusing harder than that, or maybe not even as much?

Quick question about the mechanics of magic loss due to essence loss in point buy character creation.

As I understand it, in priority or sum-to-ten you could, for example, get magic=4 due to your priority in magic, spend your resources on 2 essence worth of ‘ware, dropping your magic to 2, then use your free karma to buy your magic back up to 4 for (3+4)*5=35 karma.

In point buy I think that instead, if you wanted four magic and two lost essence, you’d just have to buy your magic up to six, then lose those two points of magic ‘off the top’. The effective cost being (5+6)*5=55 karma.

(Obviously in this game a useful magic rating would be higher than four, but I was using that for purposes of illustration.) Do I have that right that if I want ‘ware in my character, I have to lose the magic points off the top of what he’s purchased (potentially quite costly if trying to get to, say, magic 8 with a couple of essence of ‘ware, that is 95 karma of lost magic … I had a story worked out that was pushing me in that direction, but the cost is making me think twice).

On a totally different topic — anyone making a pure mage (i.e. can astrally project)? I’m still trying to decide on magic variant. With this many points to work with, mysad is tempting, but having at least one astral projector would be nice too.

Aria, do you have a list of which major players we shouldn’t use as patrons, or should we just go ahead and make our proposals and you’ll let us know if you see a problem?

For that matter, any other players have major powers that they have big problems with, that they’d prefer other’s aren’t working for?

(I hadn’t really thought about the patron angle before reading your latest update, but I was really glad you brought it up
    — it actually solves a story point I was having trouble with. Conveniently, at this stage of story development, it doesn’t matter in the least who that patron actually is, just that a patron happened. So before I somewhat randomly choose one, thought I’d check if there are any I take off the list of possibles)
