<<Let’s see if we can get a look at what is going on in there.>>

Kynos commanded the drone to approach close to the ceiling and connect to one of the cameras. Once again it was a question of if his drone would be able to enter the local host.

    Spoiler:

    Teamwork Agent: 8d6t5 1

    Watchdog: 9d6t5 1

    This close to a glitch

    Defense: 4d6t5 1

no success but no alarm either

    Teamwork Agent: 8d6t5 3

    Watchdog: 11d6t5 2

    Camera: 4d6t5 1

One success, but one is enough.

Drone enters local host and sets the Agent to search for camera streams. Then it copies and relays them to the team. Since those are not illegal actions, I can basically buy hits

The drone soon sends a feed of the camera facing the group, then what looks to be a camera on the other side of the wall. That camera gives the distorted view of a fish-eye lens, looking over a room that stretches a good distance to either side but less straight ahead. Most of the room looks pretty utilitarian, with storage racks and what look like pods from a coffin hotel, and smaller kitchen area. However the ground off towards each end has large circles inlaid in the ground, and the end walls appear to be covered in something like an abstract mosaic, although the resolution at this distance and distortion doesn’t allow the details to be picked out.

Most notably, there is nobody moving around.

The drone keeps looking for more camera feeds, however only reports back with “off-line” messages, eight of them in fact.

<<Hm. That does not bode well.>> Kynos sent through the feed. <<I’ll edit you out of the picture, but expect to find something nasty behind a door where no cameras are there to witness what’s going on.>>

Lily hadn’t seen many horror films since she emerged from London Below, life had enough horror in it and she much preferred fluffy teen trid dramas, but she silently agreed with with Kynos’ assessment, this did not look good at all!!

    > Let’s get this door open then and find out what is going on…

    She replied with some trepidation

“are you going to join us before I crack this open or wait to see what lies beyond” she gave the last part some b movie story melodrama.

There where time she wished her danger scanning brain was wrong. But as her adrenaline started the surge she felt calmer and more settled. She cranked up the magnification on her monical and bent her concentration to the lock. She needed to know what efforts she would need to get through it. She had a class A pass key but would it be enough or would she need to pull out the sequencer too?

<<You might still have a chance to talk your way in and out – if I join up with you, that goes out of the window. I’ll move in position outside the door though, so I’ll be close by to assist you.>>

Kynos replied and made his way with his colleagues gear in bag towards the corridor.

The door was closed with a old fashioned mechanical lock. This part of the overall lab wasn’t that old, but they must have had their reasons. It was a decent lock, but given the lack of time pressure Batshit didn’t have trouble sweet-talking it.

On the other side the lights were out, but with the light shining through the door they could vaguely see a square room, about 6 meters per side, walls decorated in some sort of pattern of wavy and weaving lines, mostly empty except for what looked like a small freezer in one corner and what what looked like a hospital bed, with portable screens beside it.

The only other door from the room was on the adjacent wall, lead away from the direction they had come in.

Reaching her face in just far enough to look down the adjacent walls, Batshit notices a low mana field aggravating her. It doesn’t feel polluted or angry or anything, just slightly low mana.

“Let me go first” Lily whispered to Batshit… “I’m less squishy” she replied to Batshit’s questioning look

Kynos commanded the drone to follow Lily discreetly while keeping the cameras from noticing them.

TThe room was remarkably empty for being part of a secretive underground lab facility. Also somewhat dark, as there were no lights on in the room. Still, Lilly could see well enough in low light.

There was a blood pressure cuff and IV stand by the bed. A sign instructing unauthorized personal not to open the freezer was taped to the freezer lid. There was one camera mounted in the center of the ceiling, but presumably it was one of the ones that the drone had reported as inactive.

The other door was different than the one Lilly had entered through, looking a bit like a ship door– steel with a small round window, and a wheel for opening and closing it. Closer inspection revealed a label of “Cross Marine Technologies Inc.” So perhaps they had in fact used a ship’s door for the job.

The window in the far door reveals a small chamber, with a matching door on the far side of it. Beyond the window in the second door it is too dark to make anything out, even with lowlight.

As Lilly, Batshit, and Kynos’ drone continued their exploration, they quickly established a few things:

The power seemed to be out everywhere beyond the first room. This had also knocked out almost all matrix devices, so their ability to communicate back to Kynos was soon challenged.

The lab complex seemed to be formed of modest sized rooms in an arc. Some quick measurements and calculations suggested that the rooms nearly touched at their inner corners. Further out, as the wedge separating them widened, were the small chambers with the nautical style doors that allowed passage from one room to the next. The doors were apparently built with a mechanical interlock such that only one door of each small chamber could be open at a time.

There was a clear pattern in the mana levels of the rooms. The large room at the start had normal man, but the next chamber, with the hospital bed, had been a little low (-1).

The next room had a higher mana level (+2), and was empty except for a few desks and chairs.

The third had a stronger absence of mana (-3), and had some shelves with gas masks, air bottles, and glow sticks.

The fourth had enough extra mana to make Batshit feel a bit giddy (+4); possibly it was the mana level that was letting some plants in that room glow faintly.

Predictably by this point the fifth room was also low in mana, the worst yet (-5). Notably at the inner corner towards the next room, there was some sort of apparatus in the form of a large steel tank with some electronics bolted on around the outside. It certainly looked more like ‘lab experiment’ and less like ‘finished product’. There were also a couple of hand pump carts and a stack of a few empty pallets.

When they looked at the window into the small chamber leading out of the room, however, their view was blocked by a smear of something dark on the other side of the window. Possibly blood, but it was hard to be certain.

As the connection threatened to break up, Kynos began to move after the two and the drone, keeping always in range – oblivious to the capriols the local mana landscape made.

Bronwean teased the lock, the picks feeling out the the pins as she suspended nonsense sweet nothing to the mechanism. As the lock surrendered to her ministrations she gave little hope and squeak of victory

    “Oh yesh”

She took up lily’s offer to go first, keeping careful watch on lily’s blind spot as she checked the rooms out.

The weird mana flow tugged at her thoughts and gave her an idea. Soon as lily indicated he had the rooms cleared, batshit flowed forward the freezer did a spin and leant forward in a dramatically exaggerated manner to gently touch the exterior with her outstretched index finger. Did it feel devoid of manna? Satisfied with her conclusion she scurried across room the armoured pressure door.

She jumped up to try and see through the window. The she stepped forward to touch the door, trying to relax and empty the swirling maelstrom of her mind so she could make a comparison. Did the lack of manna feel the same as the lock up or the toxic zone. Satisfied she turned to lily

“Do you think I should dye my hair pink?”lily roller her eyes and opened the door.

The manna dropped away and continue to drop as they pressed further in. When they reach the door out of the last lab room batshit took on look at the smear on the door and message d Kynos

“I think we are out of my area of specialization and back into yours you want to close up so we can get tooled up?”

<<Acknowledged. I’ll take the lead after you gear up.>>

Kynos moved in and gave the two runners back their equipment while making himself sure, his rifle was loaded with APDS and the genade launcher with HE.

<<Ready?>> he asked before opening the next door.

Batshit shouldered her gear on. Then she checked the magazine in her AR was AP and her pistol was gel. Ready she took hold of the opening mechanism and waited for Kynos to give his signal he was ready.

Soon as her hand closed on the handle, bronwean knew she was I deep trouble, the colour drained from her face as fast as the mana drained from her system

“holy fuck! Shit me! Just go just go, I’ll try and keep up”

She locked eyes with Kynos’ agate hard as usual and waited for his nod to open the door.

The door pulled open, and something struck down from above the door, swinging a pair of spikes towards Kynos — but the mercenary was faster still.

Before Kynos consciously registered what was about to assault him, he got his pre-retaliation in, lifting his rifle and sending a short burst of hand loaded armor piercing rounds into whatever the thing was.
